Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Hi all,

I've just ordered a set of Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Slash APH1s to go on to my Gibby LP Standard. I can't wait to instal them!!

A question mainly for any LP users. How do you all rate the Gibson LP Standard electric circuitry (pots and caps etc.)? While I am updating the Pups from teh burst bicker Pros is it worth also updating the elecrics? Would something like the 'RS Premium electronics Upgrade for Production Gibsons' be the right one??

Thanks in advance,

Al

I thought that Slash used regular-production APH-1's in his Les Pauls.... :22:

I did too until I saw someone posting on here saying that SD now produced a Custom Shop Slash APH. Seemingly the man was sent a selection of APHs all slightly different in spec from which he picked out this type which has now become the CC version. It is meant to be a slightly tweaked version of the standard APH. It is Single conductor, Calibrated magnet wound 1 bobbin at the time not on bulks" according to MJ at SD. There was a review poseted here earlier in the month as far as I remember.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

I replaced the pots in two of my Les Pauls with CTS 500K pots and also put Orange Drop caps in. It tends to open things up a little bit and I noticed a little more versatility in the sound. With the stock 300K tone pots I tend to always leave the knob at 10. Adding the 500K opened it up more and allows me more use of the tone controls to dial in different tones that I like, especially with the neck pickup.

It's all based on what you like and want from the guitar. I have a 58 Les Paul reissue that I have never tinkered with at all and never will. I don't even know the pot values or the cap values, I just know that I like the tone so it stays the way it is. I would try your new pickups in it "as is" and if you want to tinker after that then do it. The RS upgrade kit seems like a good option, or, I know John at Blackrose also offers and upgrade kit with CTS pots and Hovland or Orange drop caps (you can take your pick).

Thanks Badco33

I am very much a novice when it comes to fiddling around with the guts of the guitar and what difference it may make. You've explained it to me very well, thanks a lot.

Cool, I didn't know....

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

I usually upgrade to CTS pots at some point in the guitars life. Usually after I have gotten to much gunk in the stock pots. The Gibson pots are fair, they usually don't have as smooth a roll off as the CTS pots. I almost always switch to .022 OD caps, it is a minor issue I am sure but it makes me feel better.

Sorry I can't comment on the RS kits.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Oops let us all know how you like those Slash pups. I am a big fan of the A2P's.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Cool Al, I'm really digging mine a lot. I gotta rewire my guitar though and I too am thinking about upgrading my parts.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Albert F, about the RS kit, I got one and installed it just after replacing my stock Gibson ceraminc pickups with a Seth Lover bridge and Antiquity neck. I ended up going back to stock pots for the bridge pickup, as it seemed to bright and less chunky to me with 500k volume pot. I used 50s wiring instead of the recommended wiring by RS. I really didn't notice much difference either way. I think a 500k pot for the neck volume helped make it sound more open, like a single coil, it changed the volume curve as it is turned down. What I mean is, the volume knob with a 500k set at 8 sounds like a 300k set at 5. I think a person can add a resistor between two tabs on the pot to minimize this effect. The Hovland caps do make the tone knob more useful. Hingsight: I would've bought a 500k pot for the neck volume and upgraded the tone caps to Hovlands or tried the Orange Drops based on their popularity.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Wattage - thanks for the comments very useful. No worries about RS upgrade kit I'm not set on any particular brand.

MJ - I'm hoping to get the new puppies before Christmas but I will probably have to eave the guitar into the tech early in the new year. As soon as I get it set-up I'll post a review.

Remember 'puppy' is for life not just for Christmas! - Sorry I coudn't resist... :laugh2:

NT02 - thanks for the reply. It's interesting what you said about changing back. I'll certainly be doing a fair bit of testing with the new pups with the current electrics and see how things work out.

BTW info on the Custom Shop Slash APHs is a little thin and hard to come by there is nothing on the SD site about them. If anyone has any further info I'd love to hear from them.

Thanks once again to all of you.

Albert!
You HAVE to give us a follow up on this one! Im curious about that APH->CC thing. I knew Slash used CS pickups (you'd use 'em too if you had the cash!!) based on the APH, but I didnt know it was slightly different in terms of "specifications".

I,m dying for a set of JP... :barf:

All I know is that they are scatter wound and on antiquity hardware, no idea about DC resistance or anything though...

Thames

As soon as I can I'll let you know how they sound. I don't know how they will
compare to the standard APHs but I'll pass on whatever feedback somes to mind! MJ said they should arrive before Christmas with some luck.

Destructone

Give Maricela Juarez (MJ) a call in the SD Custom Shop. The contact no. is on their website.

Rinse Master

I'm not sure what the resistance is myself but if ahy info comes with the pups I'll post it here.

Hello @Albert F
I know it's been a while, I find your post about ordering custom shop Seymour Duncan Alnico II pro pickups?
Can you tell me your impressions, it seems I can't find your review on those.
How do they compare to regular production APH-1?

Thnx for your time

Yes, thnx.
I'm aware of new Slash Alnico's, but those are not Custom shop wired pickups.
Those are regular production pickups, slightly different then Alnico II pro's.

There are very few reviews on Custom shop APH-1 pickups.
If someone has custom shop Alnico's compared to regular ones,
it would be appreciated :) :notworthy

P.S. Albert F promised detailed review, but...

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Slash has always used production pickups, whether APH-1, APH-2 or other SD models. The only exceptions are the prototype signature pickups, one of which became the APH-2 Slash model. Those were wound in the custom shop. And once, a long time ago, he needed a set of zebra APH-1s right away and we had a bridge version in stock. But for the neck version, MJ wound a zebra APH-1n in the custom shop because we could get it out the door faster than using the production floor to build the pickup.
