Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Wow! this is kind of twist. There were more then few rumors that Slash uses
custom shop wind pickups. If he uses standard production Alnico II pros for years, there is no need for me to change those same I already have (?!)

Maybe will try new Slash Alnico's, although, he did record all his stuff on regular Alnico APH-1 pups.. :scratchch

Those rumors are false. With the exception of those pickups I mentioned above, Slash has never used custom shop or custom wind pickups.

Now there's nothing stopping you or anyone from ordering Slash pickups made in the custom shop by MJ and Seymour. A lot of folks will pay extra just have their pickups made by Seymour or MJ. That's understandable.

But -- again -- Slash doesn't use custom shop pickups. Nowadays, he uses off-the-shelf Production Floor APH-2 pickups. And before that, he used off-the-shelf Production Floor APH-1 pickups.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

I just had a chat with Seymour about the Slash pickups and he has, in fact, wound pickups for Slash in the past. However, the big difference between what he's wound for Slash and off-the-shelf pickups is that the Custom Shop versions have single conductor cable. Otherwise, the magnet and winding spec are basically the same -- however, his winding machine is slightly different from the ones on the Production Floor.

Suffice to say, if you want Slash's sound, you can get it with off-the-shelf APHs. If you want single conductor cable, you can order your APHs that way from your dealer. However, if you want Seymour's DNA on your pickup, you're going to have to order it from the Custom Shop (and pay custom shop prices).

According to this, Seymour Duncan did wound (custom shop) pickups for Slash.
Thnx for previosuly info, but this got me little confused - whether Slash uses or did use custom shop wound pickups ?? :boggled: :boggled:

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

once, a long time ago, he needed a set of zebra APH-1s right away and we had a bridge version in stock. But for the neck version, MJ wound a zebra APH-1n in the custom shop because we could get it out the door faster than using the production floor to build the pickup.

That's the pickup. I wrote that it was wound by MJ. Maybe my memory is off and it was wound by Seymour.

It's possible that Seymour wound some pickups for Slash prior to me joining SD in 1993. But since '93, that's the only custom shop pickup I'm aware of that went into Slash's guitar. The other exceptions were the prototypes that eventually became the APH-2. Hopefully, that makes it clear.

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Ahh.. So Slash is a cork sniffer! :D He's got to have single conductor but otherwise stock APH1/2s

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

BTW info on the Custom Shop Slash APHs is a little thin and hard to come by there is nothing on the SD site about them. If anyone has any further info I'd love to hear from them.

Thanks once again to all of you.

Al

Are you talking 'bout these Slash A2P's ?

http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/humbucker/vintage-output/alnico_ii_pro_s_1/ - only 10'ish Dollars more than the regular A2P's that i have.

AFAIK, these are NOT custom shop jobbies - so i have no idea which ones you got !?

Re: Just ordered SD Custom Shop Slash APHs

Are the CS pickups made with different materials (better) in comparison to standard production?
