One way to use radial caps is to use the old method of vertical chassis mount. My Plexi build has them mounted outside the chassis. If they're short enough, they could be mounted internally and wired as necessary.

Yep, and most of the places that sell those caps also sell the necessary clamps for mounting them on top of the chassis. My Splawn has several mounted this way too, they just sit on top of the chassis like a tube.

You guys are talking about Can Caps.
I was talking about the Radial Elytics.....like you see in a computer...or virtually all other modern day electronic devices........with the exception of hand-wired guitar amps.

A collection of Radial and Axial caps. A clamp mounted can is a Radial cap.

The difference is in the lead positions. Radial lead caps have both leads out the bottom. Axial lead caps lay on their side and have one lead on each end.

You guys are really working overtime with this.
Nobody ever mounts a can cap on a turret/eyelet board, in place of an axial.
Can caps are quite expensive and replace several caps in one can.
I am talking about the single value radials (I thought that was obvious)...that are often WAY cheaper than their axial brothers.
You may pay 2-5 dollars for an axial...and be able to find the same value radial for 73 cents.
I think we have about talked this to death.

It just depends on what's available, in my mind. If you're building one-off amps, the difference isn't that much, but it you're doing a line of amps, it would definitely add up. I could easily do radial caps on a turret board, just lay them sideways, hook to two turrets, and wire as necessary.

A small cable tie could hold the can down, or some silicone goop.

Them wicked PCBs sure have a way of locking your thinking "inside the box"... Its the same component, just mounts differently. Improvise, gotta be half a dozen ways of doing it easily and reliably

This is now starting to get tricky.


The solder pads for the flying leads are ridiculously tiny





Ive made a little progress doing a game of twister with the wires.

Right I've missed my own self imposed deadline on this but the whiskey is calling.

I've got almost all of the pot wiring done just the gain pot to go. After this it's just the loop and OT secondaries and we're good to go.

It's finished! Well mostly.

I need to lower the EQ voltage a bit & get some new valves in it.

After a bit of tidying ill post more pics.

This thing has a ridiculous amount of gain and a pretty funky way to dial it in but I'm loving it so far.

Here are some final shots with it as tidy as I can be bothered to make it for now.

Note the bias pot is temporary whilst I wait for the correct valves to arrive so I can figure out what value resistors i'll need to set it correctly

I finally got around to recording a little something after spending the last week pulling my hair out trying to fix some hum that I since learned is caused by the crappy reverb circuit and is also present in the original. I think i'll just ditch the verb...

It is. This thing has a ridiculous amount of gain.

That was on about 5. The great thing is due too the EQ the entire range is usable.
