The best thing in the world for this is to get one of those things shaped like a "man" that has croc clips for arms and a magnifying glass or a little lamp for the head, with a heavy base. Best thing I ever bought

For soldering normal stuff on small pcb's 400 degrees celcius is very sufficient, and does not fry the components and the pcb-board.
So this one seems to be a nice on the road iron to have.(800F=427Celcius)
Won't fry anything but small SMD's!

Go to radio shack and get yourself a pair of "helping hands". It's a weighted base with poseable arms on it that have little metal clips on the end for holding stuff while you solder. It's even got a magnifying glass!

I saw the ad for this thing yesterday. One of the uses demonstrated in the ad was repairing a broken wire on an electric guitar, so they might have had that use in mind when designing it.

Shhhhh!!! Don't tell 'em ... :laugh2:
A lot of them are sold under the name helping hands, or solder hand ... they are very useful, but they can get in the way sometimes to ... a pair of curved jaw hemostats work well also, as you can often clamp them and let there base support the connection over a pot or the like ... hemostats gotta love 'em so many uses (heat sinking to ... :laugh2: ). I've also seen one of those helpers that has four flexiblle bend in place arms, it fits in a base that locks into a workbence vice mount (ball mount) ... hobby shop/ handy guy catalogues (for like serious model builders have tons of stuff like that BTW).

Like anything else they are ideal for certain things, depending on model they get REAL hot! They are adjustable, but unless you can measure the temp of your soldering tip, and then duplicate it, they are trial and error for a while.Scott_F said:I'm just worried about too much heat frying my components. Great idea though. The cordless thing intrigues me. My brother in law has a cordless soldering iron that actually runs on butane, refills like those refillable cigaretter lighters. Not sure how hot it gets. Looked like a pain to me.

I hear people joke like this all the time, but I don't believe it ... solder stand (although you gotta weight those cheap Radio Shack things inside with steel shot {or the like} ... to keep them from tipping over they are so light), that gives you a place to put it, burned fingers ... hemostats ... the cord is errk some at times, but that's a matter of how you lay out your work area, the iron comes in from my right, and leaves from my right (slightly above, no dragging along the work surface), thanks to a spring and a bent wire coat hanger. Anything that could get knocked over, is keep out of reach to the left and way in front. Now I have burnt my fingers on pre tinned bus wire, but I think everyone gets that as a rite of passage or something once or twice... :saeek:
