Just tried a couple of 65 amps...

..My friend who imports matamp, Splawn, Harry Joyce etc just took delvery of a 65 London and Soho head, each with 2x12s, as well as a Reinhart head.

We took the 65s for a test drive, and I can totally see what the hype is about. The london is basically two separate channels, one being an EF86-based Vox AC15 front end and the other being a Marshall 18watter-esque channel, with both channels feeding into an EL84 power section.

The Ac15 channel is one of the sweetest, most beautiful tones I've ever heard. Clear as a bell and tight, but very smooth under the fingers and beautifully balanced. Pushed into overdrive, it sings and holds together very well. I now understand why the EF86 has such a magical reputation. Easily the nicest amp I've tried since buying my Victoria.

The 18 marshall channel is cool, and really only suffers by being in the same amp as that beautiful vox channel. Compared to a handwired Marshall 18 watter I'd say it was a bit smoother, but with a tad more fuzziness at full blast. That could be the result of the alnico blue alongside the G12H30 in the cab, though.

The Soho is more of it's own thing, and has a blackface fender-by way of EL84s kind of tone. Think low wattage blackface with a different character to a 6v6 deluxe reverb. Basically a smaller tone than most ri blackfaces, but a much nicer sounding amp than any ri I've tried.

Next visit we're moving on to the Reinhart. Apparently that's a trainwreck crossed with a metal-panel marshall. Now, where are my earplugs...

you've probably seen Gearjoneser's and my remarks regarding the London when we saw it at the first LA Amp Show. Definitely very impressive ... surprisingly great bass response for an 18 watt amp, and crunch forever.

Pretty solid amps, I've gotten the chance to mess with a London halfstack once or twice. I remember wanting more headroom out of the Vox channel and the Marshall side was very JMP plexi-ish.

They make a 35watt, 4xEl84 version of the London called the Marquee. That'd be an outstanding club amp.

Yeah, Curly and I really liked those amps when we heard/saw them. I think they win the prize for being the coolest looking amps, and the tone is really sweet on them. I read a big interview with Dan Bouhl about how he kept making changes as Pete Stroud would give his input till it was perfect. Stroud invested a lot of his own money to be a partner.

After seeing them at the LA Amp Show in 2005, I also saw them at the Vacuum Tube Valley Expo in Pasadena, Ca. That place had less traffic in the 65 Amps room, so I got to hang out with Pete Stroud and Dan, telling jokes and jamming on Dan's guitars. When we started talking pickups, Pete and I got into conversations about pickups, and he started handing me his guitars which were freshly loaded with Gibson Custom Shop PAF's. Those amps sounded even better once I heard them with Gibson's finest handwound pickups! Pete was like "yeah, Gibson sends me tons of stuff!" Must be nice playing for Cheryl Crow!

Too cool.

I'm a dead man. I'm getting haunted by that 65.

It turns out the Marquee is a different amp rather than an uprated london, so it'd be cool to try. But that london has some magic in it. I have a strong suspicion that a london and my Victoria double deluxe would be a great way to spend time during the evenings. Even if I don't buy one I'm gonna have to scam it out of him for touring. Y'know, product placement and all...
