Kieth Richards Amplifier

Re: Kieth Richards Amplifier

I use to have a Guitar mag with a feature on him and I remember he used two amps blended for a lot of recordings one driven and one clean. You probably need to tune like he does and without the low E string to be authentic.

Re: Kieth Richards Amplifier

what amp is that christian? I've heard bad things about the new fenders using linear taper pots not audio taper, causing a large jump in volume at low settings. what do you guys think?

Re: Kieth Richards Amplifier

Here's a clip I did using a G&L ASAT into a Celtic Caitlin. The Caitlin is a 50s tweed Fender Tremolux clone, built by our very own Scott_F. I think it comes pretty close to the gritty tone you hear on Sticky Fingers.

Keef has (and does) use any and everything...

Lots of old tweed Fenders and lots of old (and VERY LOUD) Ampeg amps during the 70's

I'll tell ya this...this rig will get me REAL close

HUH! I was right you got have some serious but subtle echo mojo, Christian is using OG echoplex while Keith is using Fulltone's TTE. Christian did KR use SS version or tubey version back in the day?

Hmmm...I have a Victoria tweed deluxe style which I understand is a pretty great repro of the original, and it basically has no sound until it is on ~2 on the volume controls...I have read that this is the nature of the circuit, not a pot issue.

Re: Kieth Richards Amplifier

I just heard that the biggest jump in volume is 1-3, and that some people are modding them to have audio taper pots. KG, do you have a clip that isn't QT? It always changes settings around on my computer when I download it.

Yep, that's very close to my ears.

How do you set the amp Eq for that tone?

Anyone knows what were Keef's settings BTW?

I had the tone on the Caitlin set to 3, just to cut a bit of the Tele treble and give the sound more beef. The tone can act as a slight gain knob if you turn it up, too. The volume knob on the two channels is very interactive, so you need to set the volume on the channel you're not using to get it just right. There aren't many knobs, but they're capable of getting you a variety of tones. Typical tweed circuit, I believe.

I'm not sure if Keef could even tell you what his settings were back in the 70s. Just gotta use your ears. Subtle slapback adds some nice dimension. He used to use that quite a bit. The key word here is "subtle."

I believe that is a Tweed Super Clone built by Bruce Collins of Mission Amps.

Re: Kieth Richards Amplifier

I'm just interested in what he used in the 60's.

Cranked up Fender Twins... Ampegs, Supros... Voxes, all kinds of stuff.

For 'lower' volume stuff, a Champ or Princeton... maybe a Pro Jr. with a new speaker & better tubes...

If you hunt around TapeOp.com you might be able to dig up the interview from a few years ago with Jimmy Miller, he was the producer on a lot of those records & he was talking about the sessions & gear used including the amps...

Either way I'm sure you can order the back issue with that interview.

Like Ryan said thats my Mission Amps 5B4 V Front Super clone...it was built by Bruce collins and based on Lew's 51 V Front Super...one of the best amps I've ever owned without a doubt!

Im sure Keith used the tube jobbies before the SS versions were out...that said all the guys that I think about with I think about an echoplex PREFER the SS versions...

-Eric Johnson
-Jimmy Page
-Van Halen

There are more but you get the idea...

Hey -
You are not the first guy I have heard say this. Do you know why this would be?
Thank You

The tube versions are real crunchy sounding and much more prone to breaking down...the SS versions are killer unit...all the tape tone and none of the real downsindes IMO...

I had a real old Echoplex (EP-1 tube version) on long term loan several years ago and swore after having it I woudl NEVER own another tape echo...it was just too much trouble but after reading up more and learning a lot i decided to give the SS versions a try...I have an EP-3 now and wouldn't trade it for ANY other echo/delay out there...

Re: Kieth Richards Amplifier

friggin' excellent! That's exactly the sound I want. I noticed that scott has a couple tweed combos, and one is around 800 bucks. Which one is best for this purpose? Probably a question for scott.

Yeah, probably a good question for Scott. Which models does he have available right now?
