Kings of Clean Tone?

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

Larry Carlton, George Harrison, Wes, Knopfler, Andy Summers, and Les Paul round out the list for me.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

Its hard to beat Danny Gatton's cover of the Beach Boys "In My Room", off the 88 Elmira St. CD.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

I'd say Peter Green is one of my favorites... like no other.. except for maybe BB King. That out of phase tone that was thin and chimey then another second fat... awesome, im thinking it was the combination of out of phase buckers.. those fat clean KT88s.. and his really amazing vibrato and phrasing. The Supernatural, Albatross, and Jumping at Shadows had some amazing tone and playing.

Mark Knopflers another.. Sultans of Swing is one of the best cleans ive heard.

I dont think Hubert Sumlin can be forgotten either... probabally THE sweetest tone ive ever heard. I guess its that no pick finger picking.. and maybe some amazing fingers. "What a Woman" still amazes me everytime i hear his solo.

Jimi Hendrix and SRV were both amazing too. Both Little Wings were some of the chimiest tones ive ever heard.

Dann Huff. Check out any of Giant's CD's for his superb clean tone. In fact check them out for his guitar tone full stop!! Little wonder he's the most sought after producer in Nashville these days. Tone to die for!!

What's this "clean" that you speak of?

As far as I'm concerned, but best part about cleans is that you can dial them out.
This sad quote is the reason we have such $!ty music these days.

Don't know his name, but the guitar tones on "Big Log" by Robert Plant are just short of awesome- one of those that just sends shivers up my spine.

That album had/has some killer clean sounds. I think his name was Robbie Blount or Robbie Blunt or something like that.

I think James Hetfield has the best clean sound...

or maybe EVH...

You may have said those as a joke, but I agree with those choices. To me EVH's clean sounds on songs like Women In Love, Hear About It Later, In A Simple Rhyme, Secrets, and Cathedral are absolutely stunning. Hetfields are pretty damn awesome as well.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

As much as I love both Mark Knopfler and Peter Green, my vote has to go to 1960's Buddy Guy. He had the ultimate gorgeous clean Strat tone.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

I will have to agree with Mark Knopfler as well. great clean tone.

Any Summers man from the Police had some great clean stuff as well.

Great post Joneser! Yeah the guy from Cris Issac is awesome. Hey how bout the guy from Huey Lewis and the News??? what is his name? He got some awesome tone, that whole band rocked ( then again he did use the Tower of Power Horns!)

I will also have to agree with EVH on some of his clean stuff like hear about it later and push comes to shove.

Henrix Definately had some great clean tones. Gilmour man sounds amazing clean as well. SRV.

Dann Huff????? he is an awesome player man but not for tone. It sounds like an oversized rack or something. sorry.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

SRV on Lenny and Riviera Paradise and Eric Johnson's clean tones on Ah Via Musicom are the ones to beat, for me.

Then I can inform you that you have not heard enough of him then!
He has a tremendious great touch and sound, hear him with less popstyle stuff and he switches to his more down to earth sound, which he has stated quite a few times is to his own likings as well, the rest is for the big money productions.
Gilmour and Landau has great clean sounds as well.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

Hey RId are you talking about the Giant stuff, cause i got all the albums. i think the songs are great and catchy, i have stated so many times that the stuff on those albums is pretty great, but i dont dig his tone too much.

are you talking about other stuff?

i totally agree that he is an awesome player!

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

Man he has played on a ton of albums!!!
He and Landau was first call studio players for a very long time, now he produces and sometimes takes a session as well, in Nashville!
The guy always had a great knack for getting the right part and sound for the tune.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

I forgot about Brian Setzer, Robben Ford, and Edge. You don't realize how huge Edge's sound is till you see U2 live. It's just brilliant that they can get those Roland delays to jive with old Vox AC-30's.

If you wanna hear him with some interesting and nice tones, look for the track 'To Be Forgotten' - my favourite track of his.
