Kiss your ash goodbye

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

Clicked onto thread just so I could like the title.

Yep. Ash is a dying species. At least in North America.
We can thank the emerald ash borer. Devastating. Believed to have entered the country on packing materials from Asia.

Probably hitched a ride on a pallet of cheap fake Gibsons from Alibaba.

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

Phasing it out is the wrong expression and quite misleading.
Unable to source the timber due to the trees being critically endangered due to insect attack is more like it.

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

A double shame that is...
Fist of all, I do love nature, so I am always sad to see trees endangered.

Second, I think ash is a beautiful and interesting wood for guitar bodies, so I think it's a shame we will not see any of them (new ones) any more in the future.

I hope the tide will change one day and that ash may return to it's former glory.

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

I can still get good swamp ash. It's available in very limited quantities to small guitar makers. I only use it on a couple guitars a year, but I totally love the tone and looks of ash and will continue using it as long as I can.

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

I am not worried about it. There are millions of species of wood, and they will find a good replacement. Prices of ash guitars will go up and in 20 years no one will know what an ash guitar sounded like.
But I am all for more sustainable, good sounding substitutes.

I own 320 acres of mountain with ash trees all over it. We log 10 acres every 5 years. Ash is still out there.

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

I liked Ash !!!

But there are so many ash guitars in the world. You can still some...

And so I hope Alder is still growing well on the West Coast

Re: Kiss your ash goodbye

I always loved the look of Ash, sad to see it go, even more under such a situation.
But there are other beautiful woods, and maybe soon we will get to artificial so all these problems will be a thing of the past.
Imagine choosing your tonewood AND look, crafted to industrial precision. Hmmmmmm
