Klon Centaur- why? For you Klon fans...

Re: Klon Centaur- why? For you Klon fans...

Soul food is a piss poor Klon, only idiots would mention that pedal in a Klon thread.

You may not like the Soul Food but it sure doesn't make me (and apparently many many others) an idiot because I (we) do.

I think it's a pretty big endorsement if an actual Klon owner uses one to protect the value of his original.

It's really pretty close. The gain jumps up a bit quicker, and it's a bit more harsh, but it's really damn close to a Klon. Spend a bit more and get an Ikon, KTR, or Golden Pony and you'all be even closer, but the Soul Food is a pretty decent pedal.

That said, I've found a lot of durability issues with modern EHX stuff. But at that price point, they're good for a few years, then replace them.

The guys from That Pedal Show already did that homework.
Tummus, Klon, Soul Food and others tested and compared in great detail. :)

Despite it being advertised as a Klone?
advertising is a lot of bs

i dont like the soul food but i dont love the klon either. apparently this guy thinks bringing a $70 pedal to a gig makes more sense than bringing a $2000 pedal and it does a good enough job that hes happy with it. totally understand his position.

ive tried a bunch of em and the soul food is fine for what it does but it doesnt feel much like the klon under the fingers.

Re: Klon Centaur- why? For you Klon fans...

i really don't know his success
i have very good and fantastic overdrives

they are not the clone centaur

Re: Klon Centaur- why? For you Klon fans...

My 2 cents: Soul Food, while a usable overdrive, is the least Kloney of all the popular Klones. Tumnus is right there with everything else, and it's small, low noise, etc. and it is what I own personally.

And yes I've done the in-person test with the SF, Archer, Tumnus, a few others, and a real Klon.

Re: Klon Centaur- why? For you Klon fans...

I picked up a Soul Food a while back and loved it initially. I quickly realized it's super touchy about what amps you use it with and was a bit too harsh for my tastes, so I went shopping for a more authentic Klone and ended up with an Archer. I debated between the Archer and the Tumnus, but couldn't get my hands on a Tumnus to try so I picked up an Archer (which I had tried with my amp several times). I was blown away by how much better it sounded to my ears. Much smoother and more responsive.

I see the Soul Food as a good pedal to get your feet wet with the circuit, but it's worth the jump to an Archer, Tumnus, etc...

For me the magic of the circuit is in how it reacts to my amp when it's already overdriving and how it stacks with my other overdrive pedals. It's almost impossible for me to get a bad sound out of it.

Thanks Frank! I appreciate all the responses, but you addressed the one I was actually questioning.

As was Jerry's post. Hence my reply. I guess I could have expanded on that thought and referenced reviews and YouTube videos.

Re: Klon Centaur- why? For you Klon fans...

All I know, is the Klone side of this thing sounds great no matter how I use it... Pushing the amp, pushing another pedal, supplying the grit, pushing the King of Tone clone its paired with. ...and, while my only experience with other Klones or real Klons is herding them on YouTube, I find it's real close. Even if I ever discover it's not as close as I think it is, it sounds damn good. The builder says its Klone side is part for part like the original including the chip and NOS germanium diodes.
