Klon vs Soul Food

Great A/B comparison. Doesn't change the riff each time he switches the box, so you can actually hear how the exact same thing is played by the exact same guy through a different pedal.

I personally can't hear the difference (and if there is a difference it's certainly not an $1800+ difference), but I was curious as to what you guys think.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

I actually like the Soul Food better. There's some deadness in the presence with the Klon but yet some fizziness at higher gain levels.

They are MEGA close, but strangely the Soul Food sounds more refined to my ear.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

i've a/b'ed them. the soul food is close but the klon does sound better. the soul food can get harsh at higher gain and tone settings. the soul food is a cool pedal but there are other pedals that get closer to the klon sound that are still relatively affordable.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

an overdrive pedal in a small box versus an overdrive pedal in a big shiny box. whatever.
Put a bassist, a drummer, maybe another guitarist or keys in the room as well as an industrially deaf sound engineer and a corners full of acoustic traps and weird reflections, not to mention a bunch of people out drinking and you will get a real idea of the differences. All of this cork sniffing suddenly becomes irrelevant.
Some people like to collect stuff for its collectability. Wine bottles, for example people will buy for thousands of dollars even if the wine has turned to vinegar inside. In the end, all pedals are just a bunch of small electrical components wired together. There really is not much difference in terms of component quality between the very cheapest factory built pedals and the most expensive hand built offerings.
Buy the expensive one if you are a collector and can afford it, buy the cheaper one if you cant. In the end, the biggest difference will come from who is playing, not what the pedal looks like.

Out of curiosity, why do you say that? I get that the Klon is so well revered, but what makes it so? I personally couldn't hear any difference between the Klon and Soul Food, but that's just me. Is there something more to the Klon than just the sound?

The sports car analogy is obvious: it looks better, shinier, and will attract more attention. In practical terms, such as getting you around to places you wanna go, they're minimally different.

I'm listening on a set of studio headphones and there's slightly more bottom end and low mids in the Klon, but it's not obvious in all settings. That said, the difference is likely more obvious in person.

I agree the difference isn't worth $1800, but there's plenty of other options available that can get you there for a fraction of that price.

Myself, I have a Soul Food and I don't plan on upgrading, but if it was critical to my sound I'd probably consider a JHS or something.

Comparing a mass produced $60 pedal to a handmade, collectible, out of production pedal that can fetch thousands of dollars and saying that there's not $1800 worth of a difference is pretty stupid. I mean it's not wrong, but it misses the point completely.

Anybody who buys a real Centaur for the tone is doing it wrong.

It's not exactly out of production. I think the guy is making new ones now (or at least the KTR).

That last line sums it up to me. The problem is that there are players who mistake the hype for it being a pedal with no other comparison, tonally. The Klon is a great pedal and if you're lucky enough to own one, good for you, but don't think the only way to get that sound is by own a Klon.

Exactly. The Klon isn't a $1800 pedal. They sold for $250 - 300 new. It's like saying you can't hear $100,000 difference between a vintage les paul and a custom shop reissue.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

No, it's definitely out of production. There will never again be centaurs made in the same enclosures as the old ones. Even if there are, they won't be "vintage."

That's true. But there are better options than the soul food as well. The Soul Food is cool pedal for the money but there are better options for a klon sound that won't break the bank either. The mythical overdrive is my favorite.

The Klon KTR is the same pedal I believe. I guess in that sense the Centaur is out of production.

That maybe absolutely true but this was just an example.
