Knobs dont fit

I bought a new pair of knobs last week, but their holes are too little for the potentiometers to fit.
What can I do for them to fit?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Knobs dont fit

Are these push on knobs for knurled shaft pots? Or are you trying to use a push on knob on a solid shaft pot?

They are push on knobs for knurled shaft pots as mine, but the hole is too little. I am afraid to force them to fit, I suppose it could damage something.

Re: Knobs dont fit

I'd just jam 'em on then. New knobs can be a little snug. Worst case scenario you're out a couple pots (30 cents each and 5 minutes of soldering).

Yeah I know pots are not expensive, but they dont sell them anywhere in my country and that means I have to order them from ebay. Anyway, its just a pair of weeks. I will try to make them fit. Thanks!

Re: Knobs dont fit

Easy. Theres 16 and 24 (or mb 18? anyway somethingteen and twentysomething) "tooth" ones... In short, "american" and "asian"

Only telestyle metal knobs with screws fit any and all. The others they fit specific pots, either american spec (cts, gibson) or foreign (epi ltd etc).

Re: Knobs dont fit

Its not the width its the # of ridges. On the knob inside / corresponding to the ones on the potentiometer shaft

Re: Knobs dont fit

I see. So do you have any advice?

Count the ridges (^^^^ things) on pot and knob... If they match, force it on. If they dont, change one or the other to match number of teeth-ridge-thingies

Or get telecaster style knobs (as also used on jackson ltd etc), the metal dome things with the screw... That just presses into the shaft (which can be flat OR ridged) tp achieve fixation with the screw's pressure and generally fits everything

Great! Thanks

Re: Knobs dont fit

It sounds like you may have CTS (US Fat) style pots and Euro/ Asian style knobs.

You can try to ream the hole a little (no mom jokes) OR you can go to ALLPARTS and they will have knobs to fit US pots.

The only thing with ALLPARTS though is you have to have a $10.00 minimum order and if you just want a couple of knobs, you might have to pad your order with some other stuff.

Re: Knobs dont fit

On split shaft pots you can CAREFULLY use pliers to squeeze to splined sections closer together.

If you force it on and you ever need to take it back off, you'll wish you hadn't.

I've been having good luck reaming the "smaller" ones out with a #1 drill bit in a large pin vise. That's somewhat smaller than 6mm so it doesn't make the hole bigger or completely remove the splines, but seems to loosen them up a bit.

That's some stupid ****ing advice if I ever heard it, even for this place. Basically, the advice is, "They don't fit, so force them. Then if they break something else when you do this, spend time and money replacing that part too," (followed by an unrealistic estimate of the monetary and time costs of doing so).

It's really ****in' simple. The knobs don't fit, so...get knobs that fit.

Re: Knobs dont fit

reaming the holes can make the knobs slanted when you fit them on, and trying to force them in place can break your pot shafts.
you should just get some US knobs man

Re: Knobs dont fit

You could take a pair of pliers and pinch the end of pot shaft on each side of the slotted end, then try pushing it on.

What I do is I have a leftover shaft from a pot I destroyed and I ream the knob by tapping the spare shaft in with a light hammer, pull the shaft back out with pliers, and then the wrong knob fits on the wrong pot just like it's supposed to.

It was my mistake. Guess I've been lucky, but all the knobs I've replaced have matched the pots I've had. New plastic knobs especially need a lot of force to go on though, I thought he was having trouble with that. I didn't realize that there were different numbers of splines.

My estimates on replacing a pot are pretty accurate. If you can't replace a pot on a guitar in under 5 minutes you probably should get your daddy to teach you to solder, because obviously you don't know what you're doing. I get my potentiometers from here: http://www.taydaelectronics.com/potentiometer-variable-resistors/rotary-potentiometer/logarithmic/500k-ohm-logarithmic-taper-potentiometer-with-solder-lugs.html and you're right, I underestimated the price . . . they've gone up to 50 cents now.
