Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

The first band that springs to my mind when rectifiers are mentioned is Rammstein. I'm pretty certain that Richard Kruspe uses one.

Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

Fletcher from pennywise claims the be the guy that brought the Mesa Recto sound in punk music... No matter if true or not, he recorded with one a lot.

Strung Out used Rectos for years as well.

Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

The first Evanescence album sounded Recto. Not sure about the others; might have been a Crate G10XL and a Peavey Rage 108.

I remember being told it was Line6 on extreme mode.

Off the top of my head that hasn't already been mentioned, Soundgarden, Lamb of God, Nevermore, Devildriver, Cannibal Corpse, Buckethead, George Lynch, The Darkness, Faith No More, Testament, Meshuggah, No-FX, Shinedown, Sevendust, BTBAM, Dååth, Thrice, Killswitch Engage, No Use For a Name, Incubus, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit....

Additionally, lots of bands blended them in the studio, even if it wasn't part of their live sound.

To add to the confusion, Some bands used them live because they were a common backline, even if it wasn't part of their studio sound.

Running both a Recto and JVM together was pretty popular for awhile.

Lots of bands used Recto 4x12s, even if they didn't use Rectifiers.

I wasn't sure if it was the same rig from Puppets or not, thanks.

Some actually think that only MoP was recorded with that setup and that the different guitar tone on Justice was the result of using the full Mesa heads rather than slaving them into Marshall power amps.

I've heard about slaving those amps lots of times, but is there a credible source anywhere? First of all, Marshall didn't make any dedicated power amps in 1986 and I don't believe the 9000 series had been introduced in 1988. Even if the 9000 series did exist, I can't see Metallica using them as they didn't sound all that great. I suppose they could've used the effects return on a JCM800, but I have my doubts. I know that Kirk blended a JCM800 with his Mark IIC+, but AFAIK James used a Mark IIC+ on Puppets and added a Jazz Chorus for clean sounds on Justice.

MOP was Mark IIC+ slaved into a Marshall amp, into Marshall cabs (likely G12-65s). They mic'd two cabs, so although it's never been mentioned I suspect they may have recorded both power sections (both the Mesa and Marshall were plugged into a cab)

AJFA was Mark IV into Marshall cabs (likely G12T-75s).

Black Album was Mark IV into a Marshall cabs with Marshall Vintage speakers.

Load is when they started using Rectifiers and Mesa cabs.

They were using effects sends and returns.

Flemming Rasmussen commented Metallica recording details all over this thread, on page 2 he confirms the slaving thing with the Mesa and Marshall.

That's cool. I've heard that slaving comment lots of times, but never seen anything to confirm it.

They were using effects sends and returns.

That's certainly possible; they could also have been running into the low input of one of Kirk's 2203s.

Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

I think it was the effects return of their 800's.

The only original JCM 800s that had effects loops at all were the 2205 & 2210. I've never seen a picture of Metallica with one during the 80s, but I suppose they could've used a rental or studio amp.

Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

Ride the Lightning was recorded with a rental, but I don't know if they used something else for Puppets.

Puppets could have been done with whatever was in the studio. I'm not very well versed on Marshall amps so I don't know all the designations for them.

I feel like if you recorded a rock/metal album from 1995-2010 there was probably at least a little Rectifier blended in.

Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World was a racktifier into a Marshall 1960 with T-75's. Absolutely killer tone.

Also, Killswitch Engate - Alive or Just Breathing was a Triple Rectifier.

Rancid: Tim uses a Dual Rectifier, Lars uses a 900.
Foo Fighters: Dual Rectifiers, then Road Kings. (Not sure post 2005)
Tool: used pre-Diezel (I think through Aenima)
Not Tool. He used a Marshall bass head. Mentioned it in a couple interviews and I saw them at a little bar just before they hit it big but after they recorded their first album.

Re: Known albums/songs recorded with Rectifier amps

Adam Jones did use a Dual Rectifier at one point as part of a blended amp tone.

From what I understand he used the Super Bass on Undertow and added the Rectifier (blended) on Aenima. He switched to Diezels around Lateralus, and he was using two VH4s and a NMV Marshall when I saw them last night. :D
