im getting a Drz route66 in th mail this week and was wondering if these tube types can be used in the same amp without re-biasing, cause.... on the tube store it says they are the same "type"... er sorry my tube knowledge is very dim... im only wondering because kt66's seem expensive and hard to find,... so that in case of emergency i could pop in my 6l6gc's

thx

Yes, they are within the same tube family, but I'd really stay with KT66's in that amp. After all, it was designed for that tube! :laugh2: You can get a pair of the Chinese Valve Arts KT66's for $50.

BUT those chinese KT-66 tubes are junk, not the real thing nor even close.

Pay the the $150 ~ $200 for a matched pair of GEC KT-66 tubes.

BTW - The bias is very different for 6L6 and KT-66 as is the heater current (e.g., 1.3A for KT-66 verses 0.9A for 6L6) Be careful if you doing a reverse swap (ie 6L6 original replaced with KT-66) because you will burn out your power transformer.

Re: kt66 and 6l6gc tube questions....

for backup, you could use the Groove Tubes KT66-HP, which you can probably find for about $50 a pair

Re: kt66 and 6l6gc tube questions....

damn thoes are expensive tubes,... after droping that much on a pair how often does one replace them? i hear tom morrello has never had his jcm800 re-tubed...

but theres no danger in trying a nice 6l6 tube in place of them right? just to try it out?

the GT KT66's seem to be pretty good, better than the chinese?

i wish jj made a KT66
I think they're working on it .. the question will be whether or not it comes in the big coke bottle ...

from Eurotubes:
"Now I spent some time trying to get a commitment from Jamona for a real KT66 and he is on the verge of saying yes. He says he could build one in a fairly short amount of time if he were to use a 6L6 bottle but it would take a while longer and be a little more expensive to build the larger curved bottle."

Yes... Yes ... Yes... Has anybody tried them? It's been 4 years now since this post! Please has anyone tried the new JJ/Tesla JJ Audio KT66's? Are they being shipped in the new Dr.Z amps?
