KT77 vs E34Ls

Re: KT77 vs E34Ls

Good question.

Depending on the answers, my Bogner may get a quartet of KT77s in the near future.

Re: KT77 vs E34Ls

My Carvin V3 came with Groove Tubes EL-34's, I switched to JJ KT-77's. Overall better tone, slightly more more treble and bass

Re: KT77 vs E34Ls

With my TriAxis and VHT2502 setup:

KT77 clean: slightly dull
KT77 distortion: tighter bass, more thump, and low mid crunch

EL34L clean: glassy
EL34L distortion: wider bass (not looser), mid to high mid crunch (aggressive)

Sounds like a great idea to have two heads one E34Ls and one K77s ran stereo into one 4X12 ....

Re: KT77 vs E34Ls

I've got some JJ KT-77s that are waiting to be installed in my Laney AOR-50. I emailed a highly recommended local tech about how much it would cost to do the work and he said that JJ tubes would make the amp sound harsh and bright. He recommended I use Svetlana EL34s instead as they are supposed to be much smoother.

So, I'm not quite sure what to do. I've already got the pair of the KT-77s but now I'm doubting my choice. I'll think I'll use them anyways and if they don't work out I'll take the techs recommendation. I'll let you know how they work out.

Re: KT77 vs E34Ls

Since you've got them, try them. I don't think the JJs will make it sound "harsh and bright", it sounds more like the Svets are just his favorite tube.

Re: KT77 vs E34Ls

I've never heard any JJ tube sound harsh or bright. Quite the opposite, really.

I had a Sovtek and Mesa(a likely SED) in before EL34s in my AOR. It was a really nice glossy shimmering mids and same but rolled of highs, however the bass was not defined enough for me, so I went with E34Ls, no verdict yet, but its better now than first day with them.

Same here. They seem to be a darker variety of tubes. Although I've heard about a million different descriptions about them. From "they're too dark and mushy" to "they're very smooth and tight".

Hard to tell who to listen to. The tech I got into contact with is probably the most reputable in Melbourne and knows Laney amps very well. I guess it's only his recommendation. I really want to try these KT-77s out. They seem like a really cool alternative to regular EL34s.
