Kudos to Seymour and Co.!!!!!! EVH Replica

I don't post a whole of of review stuff when I try things out, but this one I have to post.......EVH Replica guitar

I got to play one for a bit, great collector item. It is really interesting to see it in person and see just how flawlessly this this is beat up. Its not my kind of thing (replicas and relicing), but I have to say that....

This is the best sounding guitar I have ever heard in my hands! It is THE Rock sound!

After playing it a while, the guitar isn't so special (regarding tone). A Fender Start Deluxe (maple board) sounds about the same side by side unplugged. That pup?, yeah it is magical. I have never tried the '78 model yet, but if it is anything like the pup in the replica, I must call MJ soon.

The action is a little higher than what I would play, but not horrible by any means. The sound is so strange...there is low end (plenty), but not muddy. The mids are prominent, but not overpowering. The high end is crisp, twangy, and bright, but never thin or plinky. It is the the most balanced, articulate, warm and perfect sound I have ever heard out of a pickup (no matter what I plugged it into). It has the perfect amount of output to roll the volume back for cleaner things and still be hot and heavy.

This all coming from the perspective of a 20 year metal/rock player who has a few standards (Strat, PRS, Parker, Jackson, Recto tones (Road King II), and Marshall tones (Stiletto II), and jangly tones ala Fender (Mesa F-30). This wasn't typed for bragging rights, I like my stuff, but I have decent exposure and some familiarity with a handful of tones.

The EVH Franky's magic is all in the electronics. I guess Seymour has making magic for a long time!

I wouldnt go that far. I mean, if you put that '78 pickup in my Hard Maple Gibson, it would total icepick. It is also the wood, and probably yhr way its mounted to the body and everything. That must of been fun to play and Im certain your correct about how great that '78 is .

I would only assume you just pulling my chain...LOL. The wood isn't anything special, the design (a super strat with a flush mount Floyd) has more bearing on the matter. I don't think someone would generally consider putting a 78 in a Gibson like that and expect to get that sound. Yeah, it would require an Alder or Swamp Ash body, bolt-on maple neck with maple board - and you are there, the rest is the pup.

Re: Kudos to Seymour and Co.!!!!!! EVH Replica

I know there is smomething special about the 78 that I cant from anything else I've tried and thats why its my favorite. It also fits your description very well.
I also doubt it would be ice picky in a Paul. I believe the original was pulled from a Paul if I understand corectly.

Re: Kudos to Seymour and Co.!!!!!! EVH Replica

The electronics are a contributing factor in any guitar. There's a lot more to it than just that though. Try swapping necks some time. See if a neck with a dark resonance sounds the same as a neck with a bright resonance.

Re-read my first post and then re-read yours.

IIRC, even Ed has a lot of replacement necks over the years, so which one would you be referring to that is so magical or which one of the 300 replicas has the magical neck; the one I played? They are just well made maple necks with maple fret boards.

The formula is simple, but the '78 is the required ingredient. It was really cool to hear it. I'll be ordering parts and a '78 just make that sound.

I am a believer now also.

You'll have to try a few neck swaps.

The more Duncans I try, the more I'm pinpointing my favorites, and so far it's pickups like the Custom/59 A5 hybrid, Brobucker, 78, C5, Seth, and the next one I want to try is the Warren DeMartini, which is supposedly a smoother and more balanced JB.

Just stick with woods like lightweight alder for the body and you'll be fine.

I meant it wouldnt work probably in a hard maple body gibson Victory that I have. Its a very bright tonewood.I just picked up a '78 today based upon the you guys gush about it, so better be right! ahahah. How would it work in a mahagonany Les paul?... cause thats what I'll be saving it for spomeday.

Re: Kudos to Seymour and Co.!!!!!! EVH Replica

I have, quite a few in my short 20 years of playing.

It really doesn't mean much that I've been playing guitar longer than you've been alive.

Don't worry about how long you've been playing. It's not an issue.

I'm sure the '78'll sound a lot different than what's in the mahogany Les Paul. But even if you bypass the Les Paul's electronics, and connect it up with a simple circuit like Eddie put in his Frankenstein, it won't sound like his Frankenstein.

It should sound pretty good though.

I'd like to try that pickup in something like a Kramer Baretta. That'd probably be a good home for one.

Not trying to start a p****** match, but, myself as the OP stated that putting a 78 in a an Alder or Swamp Ash super strat with a maple bolt-on and a maple board would sound just like the EVH replica. So, either you weren't paying attention with the dark vs. bright neck comment or you are just being argumentative....regardless of how long you have been playing.

The people on this board that have been playing awhile and have had some gear over the years tend have a bit of knowledge that is nice to pass on to other players. You, sir, are not furthering that cause in this thread. I offered sound logic and some time on the instrument comparing it to others off the wall. So please, assist or desist. Thanks.

Re: Kudos to Seymour and Co.!!!!!! EVH Replica

Binnerscot, just relax.

I never said that the pickup isn't a large percent of the sound.

Re: Kudos to Seymour and Co.!!!!!! EVH Replica

Yeah I do need to relax or crank an amp to 11 for a half hour or so. Sorry man, my back has been killing me today with our 40 lbs. per square inch wet snow so I am just a grumpy bastard since this afternoon.
