L'59 on tele

Hi, just fitted a L'59 in the bridge of a standard tele and at the same time, a 4 way pup switch. Positions 1, 2 & 3 are fine and the SD gives the sound i wanted but in position 4 ( series ) it's useless - less volume not more and very toppy and thin. Any ideas where I've gone wrong ??

Re: L'59 on tele

It sounds like you've wired it out of phase somehow. Are you using a Fender neck pickup?

Re: L'59 on tele

Yes, using standard USA Fender on the neck. There is a chance that the neck is out of phase with the bridge - I'll pull it apart agian and have a look
Cheers , Mike

Re: L'59 on tele

Swapping the green and black wire connections of the lil59 is a better solution. Swapping the neck pickup leads will make the neck pickup cover hot and can add a lot of unwanted noise.

Re: L'59 on tele

Thanks guys,
It was wired OK to the Fender & SD diagrammes but I bet you're both right.
I'll swap over the SD connections tonight.
Many thanks for the help :burnout: , Mike

Re: L'59 on tele

Yes, out of phase was the problem - now a great fat sound on series switching - thanks again. Just one more ( as there always is !! )
I'm getting loads of static through from the scratchplate. The neck pup cover is well grounded but touching the scratchplate between the pickups on the high e side causes pops and crackles. Have tried loads of extra ground connections without success. If I can fix this I'll have the tele i want !
Any ideas will be very welcolme.
Cheers , Mike

Re: L'59 on tele

Is it physical noise or electrical noise? If it's physical, I'd either pot the pickup, or better yet, yank the cover off the neck pickup. :)

Re: L'59 on tele

Could it be static? Try rubbing one of those static cling dryer sheets on the pickguard and then see what happens. If that doesn't help, then look into shielding the pickguard with a proper connection to ground at some point. Also, sometimes you can run into noise problems with too many ground connections if they aren't all truly well grounded.
