LA Amp Show 2010. Pics!

Gearjoneser

Gear Ho
Just got back from about 5 hours of listening, playing, and photographing amps at the LA Amp Show in Van Nuys, Ca. It's basically all the cutting edge amp companies, spread out in a large hotel, displaying all their newest toys.....plus many accessories and pedals.

It's a lot to take in, but I always manage to walk away knowing which amps I'd love to have.

Later, I may post some pics, but copy and paste any you feel like talking about. So many great tones. I'll try to name and discuss any that interest you. Mention a style, and I'll point you toward the top contenders.

It's best to click on Slideshow, sit back, and gaze at all the tonal beauties! The Gearjoneser Presents!

One amp company I forgot to photograph was 65 Amps. I asked what their new red logo signified. Apparently, they're making a pro line of amps, still made in North Hollywood at the regular location, but under $2000. The London head for $1800 is awesome.

The heaviest sounding super-Marshall is definitely the Cameron....a guy known for his Marshall mods. That amp is explosive, and just huge sounding.

I also loved the Satellite amps with their cool looks, simple controls, and huge roots/blues rock sound.

The Friedman amps are amazing.....huge crushing plexis!

The Electroplex amps look great and have all the classic tones.

Mark Sampson had his baby blue Star. I wish I knew more details about it, but it's lower half seems to be more surfy, and the top side is dry???
I should have learned more about it, since Sampson from Matchless and Bad Cat fame is a serious amp builder.

I wish I'd spent more time with Tonic and BC Audio, since they've got some cool stuff.

Scumback has a grill cloth that's really cool. From a distance, it looks like salt/pepper, but up close you can see that it's thicker, infused with vinyl or something. It's basically a filter that shaves off spikey highs, sorta like a beam blocker cloth.

Those Satellites are so awesome looking. They remind me the most of Dr. Z Amps.....like the Rt. 66.

Of all the roots rock amps, I was pretty much sold on the Satellites, 65 Amps, and Electroplex.

I just looked up those Cameron amps on youtube. Wow!! I love the way they sound.

I was really impressed with Cameron at the NY Amp show. They are very close to Splawn amps in terms of tone and approach.

How did the Fuchs sound?

Who manufactured those single cut flat tops with P-90s?

Fuch's are inspired by Dumble....or the jazz fusion sound in general. Or at least, that's what they're known for.

Those cool Gumbied P-90 guitars are Kauer. The other ones with killer tops are Sweetwood.

Cool pix GJ, thanks for posting....

Was that Hayden head the "Mofo" model? Didja get a chance to hear that one? I've not seen these in the States yet..

Oh yeah.....Line 6 has hit a homerun in the modeling world. The DT50 head is a great modeler. It's in another class than the Spider Valve.
It's a flexible 50W Bogner EL-34 power section with a good L6 modeling section.

Is it digital modeling or is it like the Tech21 analog modeling sort of thing? I thought it was supposed to be more along the lines of the Egnater Tweaker where it just had a variety of tone stack options or something like that.

Gearjoneser, wish you would have said hi at the Line 6 room! Been awhile! If you're coming back Sunday do so!

Greatbob6, on your L6 question. There is no other amp like the DT50. There are 4 models which we call Topologies on it. American Clean, British Crunch, Classic Chime and Modern Hi Gain. The amplifier itself is capable of reconfiguring the power section and instantly rebiasing itself and it's negative feedback based on your choice of options. You have the ability 2 change it from Class A to Class AB and Pentode or Triode, and any combination of those. I can't tell you how many name pro players stopped by to play it and were floored. The amp is completely analog in it's switching capability between these options with the models being the digital aspect. AND when you connect a POD 300/400/500 up to it via our new L6 Link, you have access to all 16 amp models. Again the amp will reconfigure itself based on how you have setup your patch on the POD HD. The 2 channel DT50 can be set to what ever 4 topologies and settings you select. It's WSIWYG so how you save it is how it is. I dialed in a killer setting for Phil X and Pete Thorn on the Modern Hi Gain and it was brutally loud with the drive on 6 and the master volume on just 3. They couldn't believe not the dozen people in there watching that it was 50w thru our 4x12. Hope you give it a try for yourself...

Here's a few amps that I wish I had.

I was also impressed with this interface unit which takes a loud amp, puts a speaker load on it, then feeds it into the home studio environment.
I think it's made by Diffusion Audio/Two Notes. The Diezel sounded just like it should, scaled down through those speaker monitors.
