Lace Alumitone Pickups?

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

I am curious about several of the more recent Lace pickup designs but never quite enough to take a punt at their current asking prices. Regrettably, neither is anyone else. Consequently, there is no ready supply of pre-owned rejects to try out.

The perennial problem for Lace Music is that many punters expect any pickup in, say, a Stratocaster to sound like all existing pickups that they have ever experienced in a Stratocaster.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

I have one in the bridge of my charvel tele and its soon to be for sale if you want to by it off me. Mine is similar to a Fryette/VHT amp in that is stiff and very focused. Notes are precise and it has very little sustain. I find that I have to play notes harder to get them to really ring out. its not as singing pickup as its so incredibly tight. I play 80's glam band stuff and the Alumitone doesn't sound good for it. For technical death metal, it would be beastly.

I wonder how the magnetic pull differs from regular pickups. Have you compared them directly to a regular humbucker design as far as sustain and such goes?

I can hear it. Its got very little sustain compared to my other guitars/ PU's. I had a TB-11 in the tele beforehand and sustain was way better.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

Lace pickups look interesting and all, but the prices are laughable. Plus, as a whole, they sound kinda... different and usually pretty hifi.

Well I think given the low volume a lower price would be suicidal. I applaud that they are trying to move the art of guitar pickups forward at all

I just would like some other sucker to be first penguin :D

Except that the lower volume of sales is because lack of product in people hands due to price. That and they don't come stock in higher end guitars like Duncan, Dimarzio and EMG.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

I've tried them for a few hours through several different amps at my local hang out store and they seemed okay particularly clean and through a Fender amp. Mesa/ Boogies like these things a lot.

Let's put it this way:

If I bought a guitar and it was already equipped with these, I'd leave them in but I wouldn't pick these over a set of Duncans unless I was going for a specific VISUAL design.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

My excuse is that I am in Europe. Distributor cuts and import charges kick the price up to a level where all but the most ardent tinkerers are not going too take the chance.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

I've only tried the neck pickup in my LP and little sustain definitely is not my experience. It's the regular hb, not Deathbucker. I found it sounds clear and fairly acoustic with particular amp so I'm intrigued to install it in a hollowbody guitar. My friend who has tried a set said that they sound generic though, no character.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

Very wide frequency response. Would probably be a good pickup for a bass cut knob as well as a treble.
But, according to Lace, magnetic pull should be only a fraction of what you'd get on a normal pickup.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

I saw a video on them. There's maybe what, three winds between the prongs of the face and a tiny little bobbin mounted behind the face. Its basically an aluminum arch with a small Lego block sized attached to it. There's practically no string pull or magnetism going on. I imagine proper mounting is critical on these.

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

The Lace Alumitone Deathbucker in the bridge of my Jackson Dinky (alder) is probably my fave bridge pickup ever :D

Strap_DK2.jpg

I had a pair of them in a basswood Cort and they were too bloated/bassy. But when I put one in a slightly brighter guitar (my Jackson) ...it sounded totally awesome! So they do need to go into the right guitar..

Lace describes them as a passive take on the EMG 81 but more open & 'organic' sounding like a passive & that's pretty much spot-on. They're as thick/tight in the lower mids, but they're rounder, fatter, warmer & sweeter sounding on the high strings..

Here's a deathbucker clip ..just a rough/quick mix I did in audacity with no post-processing.The rhythm tracks are totally dry (guitar -> straight into the mic'd amp) No Fx.

Two Guitar tracks panned L-R, single solo track, backing drms from my bands drummer..it's for our upcoming ep.

I'm thinking of replacing the EMG 81 in my BC Rich Ironbird with the other Deathbucker I still have around..

That's what they look like underneath:

Re: Lace Alumitone Pickups?

Necrothread: I snagged a deal on (what looks to be) a body loaded with Alumitones, so I wanted to ask some questions before they got here.

With regards to the percieved lack of sustain: has anyone tried 'em with a compressor pedal? Also, how well do you think they'd work in a Bass VI type guitar?
