Lace pickups/string ground

Anyone here had any experience with Lace pickups? My query relates to the set of Lace Drop & Gains I bought, but anyone who's used Lace sensors might be able to answer my question... how silent are they, exactly? If I shield well, will I need a string ground? I'd rather avoid one if I can. Any info would be appreciated.

All Lace pickups are not built the same way. The original sensors, Gold, Silver, Blue and so on, are single coils with a radiant field barrier design that surrounds the coils. They are almost noiseless in my amp. The newer Holy Grails are stacked humbuckers and are as such noiseless. Don´t know so much about the Drop and Gain series, but as far as I remember it´s a mismatched humbucker: the two coils have different specs and also use the field barrier design. They ought to be dead silent in humbucker mode and hum-reduced in single coil mode.

Well, I don't plan in splitting them, so noise shouldn't be a problem at all then. I might give it a go at wiring up without a string ground... I can always add one in retrospect. Thanks for the info.

'Radiant field barrier' means shielding, doesn't it?

I play a Clapton Strat from the late 80's. Its completly stock and has tha Gold Lace sensors in it. They are not totally silent like a HB, but they are definately quiter than my 57 RI Strat which has Antiquity single colis in them. What I mean is they do not have 60 cycle hum, but offer a slight amount of noise. IMHO these sound so much better than the Fender noiseless that are being used in this model guitar now. I have many other guitars also, but this seem to be the one that I also go to. I love the way it sounds and I love the way it plays. I don't know if it has a string ground, but I don't recall seeing one!
