Does anybody know of any place on the net where where the community of Laney users share their knowledge??? I love my AOR and would like to ask some questions what is the best compliment gear for these babies. Thanks.

Re: Laney Amps board???

Well.. you can try the Racer X message boards. They have a guitar section where its all about PGMs and Laneys.

Re: Laney Amps board???

suislidE03,
Cool thanks man, ok I got questions, I play classic/modern power metal(EdGuy) type of stuff. In case of 50 watt AORs what majore stompboxes work better in the loop, which work best in front? How is distortion box in the Hi channel and how is it in Low channel, and what distortion box is the best for it. I love my TS9 in it but what other overdrives are a match for it. And considering stuff I am in to, what are the best Tube combos for it???
Thank you brother and brothers.

You should generally put your overdrive, distortion, and wah pedals in the front of the amp. Effects, EQ, and stuff usually go in the loop. It's all a matter of preference though. Some people put OD boxes in the loop and effects straight into the amp.

For your Laney AOR 50, which I also own, I would recommend using the standard procedure first and experiment if need be.

I used to have an Ibanez Turbo Tubescreamer which I didn't like very much for high-gain playing. Instead of saturating my tone it just gave it a big clean volume boost.

I haven't used a distortion pedal into my Laney AOR50II yet although it's something I want to try out someday. The MI Audio Crunchbox is supposed to be a great sounding dist box in the vein of a JCM 800 on steriods. The Marshall Jackhammer also seems like cool option too. The downside with distortion pedals is that most of them sound very buzzy.

Using a dist box into a Laney AOR would probably sound the best using the HI input on the normal channel to allow for the most tranparency and punch. For ultra high-gain distortion you could use the AOR channel instead however you may find yourself being attacked killer bees.

Re: Laney Amps board???

Do you guys have Series I or Series II AOR amps? I used to own a Series II 100 watt head but I could never dial out the harsh high end. I prefer the Series I now, they sound warmer to my ears and a 50 watt Series I goes pretty cheap on Ebay. The best kept secret in high-gain British amps.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Laney Amps board???

Back in 1990 I had a Laney AOR50 1X12 combo and I hated that amp. It was mushy and dark. It had some heat problems because after playing for a while it turned to mush so I was always fiddling with it. To be fair I never had the money to have it tweaked by a tech though.

Re: Laney Amps board???

haha, looks like these guys gave you most of the info already. My laney does take pedals really well, i just use my Spina SD1 for a boost and it works like magic for high gain playing. I finally played my cousins triple rec yesterday and my laney beats the CRAP out of it for lead playing. For rythym the mesa is just extremely saturated in preamp gain, no feel to it though. Didnt take my SD1 all that well either.. didnt need it haha. I would say its all preference where you put your effects pedals, but ODs and distortions go in front. I tried a metal zone and a tonebone hot british for a while, the tonebone sounded pretty nice, beefed up the tone a bit, more crunch, and a little clearer. The metal zone could have done better if it was modded. Very heavy crunch out of it though.

For you i would say get a good OD pedal (not a tube screamer) for when you play rythym unless you are satisfied with rythym already. What do you mean by good tube combos to go with it?

Re: Laney Amps board???

suislidE03 thanks man,
I kinda like my crunch now, just need a nice analog chorus for it to beef it up
eighties Priest style. How do you run your sd-1? through high sensitivity channel with presence up(no mosquito buzz??) or through low sensitivity channel? and by tube combos I mean what tubeys in the pre-amp and which in the power amp? I heard that Mullards are great for this amp? is that so?

Re: Laney Amps board???

I run the SD1 through the low input, the hi input doesnt improve the sound to me. I usually dont use any presence, i keep most of the controls around 5. I have some dark speakers with beam blockers though, so it tends to sound a little different (which i like even more, hehehe). I dont think the older laneys like yours are very bright though, so you souldnt have to worry. I hear alot of guys like putting the E34Ls for the power tubes and sound real nice. Dont know what to tell you regarding the preamp tubes. I tend to mix sovtek 12ax7lps and JJ 83s tubes. Seems like it sounds different every time i turn it on, and i always find new tones with it. If i ever get bored, then i will eventually take the time to figure out the best tubes and speakers :chairfall

Re: Laney Amps board???

For tubes, I have heard that JJ E34Ls are great in an AOR, along with some JJ ECC83S preamp tubes.
Mine needs a re-tube and that's what I'm going to get. They're not overly expensive either.
