Laney/engl.

Good evening boys,

I had a chat with rid this night, as i am getting a new tube amp head, and instead of the usual marshall i have decided on trying other stuff.

I want a good amp with a bit of Twisted Sister, AC/DC, MEtallica, Van Halen and such on it.

Two channels is a must as i need to crank the living **** out of one of them.

I have been looking at differents and we narrowed it down to this, i just want an exterior opinion on it.

Engl:
Screamer (Sound amazing from clips imo).
Thunder (Only heard black metal riffs on it, its a bit doubty.)
Richie Blackmoore.
Fireball.

Laney:
GH100/50L

Peavey 6505.

What would be your pick, and why?

Re: Laney/engl.

The Engl Screamer is a killer amp with lots of tonal possibilities. it can do pretty mucha everything from funk to death metal, and it will always stay tight.
The Fireball doesn't have all the possiblities the Screamer has, but it's more like a small version of the Powerball. Meaning tighter and with more gain.
Since you're considering a 6505 you might also check out the Powerball, since both heads are in about the same price range and the PB has tons of options and tweaks to give you about any sound you could ever want.
The 6505 is basicly the Godfather of all High Gain amp. Articulate dry crunch and lots and lots of gain on tap. I like the tone a lot and Melodic Death metal was basically designed on those amps.
No real ideas about the Blackmore,Thunder and the Laney though, sorry

Re: Laney/engl.

It could be cool to have a crunching you know AC/DC channel, a more gained Twisted sister or combining the two, and then a metallica channel you know.

Re: Laney/engl.

powerball with a Z5 footswitch could do all of what you just mentioned(4 channels rule!). Powerball has clean/crunch/lead1/lead2 channels, and if you have the switch you have acces to all of them and to a real big pallette of tones.

Re: Laney/engl.

f you want more channels, the GH laneys are out, cos they're just one channel with a gain boost, which isnt realy a HUGE gain boost.

i love it though.

the thunder i dont know, cos i only heard clips of, but the fireball and screamer are both top notch, but they're out of MY budget..
you should try and play them to see which would best suit you

Re: Laney/engl.

PB is too expensive :(

The problem is that Engl is hard to get in my part of denmark so they would be have to order it if i was to try it, so want a pretty good idea of which it is gonna be.

Re: Laney/engl.

Man, those Tony Iommi amps look cool. Pricey though.

Re: Laney/engl.

It really depends if you want a clean channel or not. I can vouch for the Screamer - it'll give you all those tones and more. The Blackmore is basically a 100w version of the Screamer (or rather the Screamer is a 50w version of the Blackmore!!!). Same preamp circuit but with more oomph.
The Fireball can give you either a clean/dirty channel or pushing the pre volume can give a crunch/distortion set up which is pretty similar to the Laneys.
The Thunder is like a lesser specced Screamer with fewer channels, but still has great tone.
I've got no experience with the 6505 (or 5150 that it's based on), plenty of gain on tap but it's not as versatile as the Engl's.
I'd plump for a Screamer or Blackmore if a Powerball is outta reach - but then again, I'm biased!!

Re: Laney/engl.

wait...unless im thinking of a different laney, i plyed one last month that was basically a 4 channel amp. it had clean w/ boost, that actually gave way to crunch. channel 2 has a boost also for soloing giving you your 4th channel. maybe im wrong but i think you can add gain to each one of those "boosts".

engls look sweet to me. i was looking at the instruction manuals for some of them. the tone possibilities look endless man. especially with the two different switchable mid settings.

i wasn't impressed with the 6505. if you're playing somewhere small, or you're like my band and use upfronts and onstage monitors, i think the 6505 wont work for you. you have to bascially crank it to get good distortion. i know i sound like a ***** whining bc it was too loud, but it seemed to me like it wasn't USEABLE if you're using monitors like me or playing in a small venue...theres my 2 cents
