Laney GH50L vs AOR

Re: Laney GH50L vs AOR

I am not a Laney expert by anymeans, but I am a die hard fan, and learning slow about the history and stuff that relates to tone. Now, I do have AOR as you can tell by my sig, I have not tried GH50L. The Sabbath days and the golden age of Iommi's use of the Supergroup is the original Laney era, the AOR in the eighties were completely different people in the business and engineering departments. Iommi did not like the change and stopped using Laney. Now, his new signature Laney amp that he started using since the reunion times are once again completely different people that were there during the AOR period. From what I heard from the sound clips of the current GH and VH series they are same very dark, very british tone with just an Englesque approuch to a tight, high gain, buttom end, I love them too, and its a definate target on my list.

Did you SAVATAGE, most underestimated metal guitarist of the eighties was Chriss Oliva he used Pro-Tube AORs, two of them 50watters. That should give you an idea how good it is for shredding as well as Warren DiMartini of Ratt he used them too.

Damn I didn't know that and I freaking LOVE his tone! Too bad I can't make my AOR sound anywhere near as good as he could. I wonder if he used the AOR or normal channel with a pedal boosting the sound..?

Ha ha, damn. A google search quickly answered my question:
http://www.geocities.com/savarequiem/gear.htm

"Criss ran his amps on the CLEAN channel ONLY!! Most amps have a high and a low output jack for the guitar plug, Criss ALWAYS ran in the LOW Channel."

Interesting. I always thought the LO input on my Laney AOR had much more mojo than the HI input.

I'll have to get my hands on a nice dirt box to run into LO input and see what it sounds like.

Yeah man, for me it was double the pleasure, I love Savatage and I asked here if any one new his set up, I was reffered to the same site you found, and almost jumped through the roof, because I already bought my AOR at that time.

But where are the other Laney brothers, come on gents jump in and elaborate on the main question of the thread !!!

Re: Laney GH50L vs AOR

My first amp was a Laney AOR 30 half stack. Honestly, I hated it. That being said, I didn't know beans about playing or tone. I'd love to go back in time and play it now that I've learned to play, LOL.

I use to have a GH-100L and I loved it! I used to run it through 2 5150 cabs, it was a smoking rig! Very much lie a hot rodded JCM800. In retrospect, it did not have that Marshall Mojo, but it was a great sound nonetheless! Sadly, it (along with the 5150 cabs, 5150 head, 2 sweet Ibanez SC420's (within 100 ###'s of each other in the serial) along with a full rack and pedalboard were stolen when the band's trailer was lifted. Sad sad day!

Re: Laney GH50L vs AOR

Well im still loving my VC50.. every time i go to a guitar store i always look through the amps and if its tube i usually try to play it. Never played on another amp that could do everything my laney could.

About the GH vs AOR, i would say the GH is fairly similar with more of a modern tone to it. Honestly couldnt comment as ive never played a GH, i played on a 30 watt AOR combo, but it couldnt switch to the high gain channel. I would also say the GH has a more cutting tone to it, and the speakers and cab you use can change the tone like you wouldnt believe, so if you happen to go Laney, be careful in your choice.
