these laney tube amps appear pretty affordable and the sound samples are good, but i'm wondering how they would do for metal music. anyone know?

Better for 80's metal than the new metal stuff. They are very British-sounding ala Marshall (they are made in England).
One head that I don't see mentioned much that does work for the new metal stuff is the Ibanez Thermion. I was fairly impressed with that head. It doesn't do the Marshall thing very well, but it's got gain for days. Reminds me of the Engl Fireball head.

cool. i read about that ibanez head but some people said that the electronics weren't that reliable. have you heard that?

I don't know about that. I just played one in my local shop. I was impressed with the looks of the build quality on it. Certainly seemed like a heavy duty amp. But then again, I wasn't expecting much since it was an Ibanez. But it had more than enough gain for any metal. It didn't seem to do the Marshall brown sound that great, but I didn't spend more than an hour or so with it. If that's what you are going for, then the Laney stuff is great. They sell that at the same shop and I liked all the Laney stuff I tried. But for new metal, I'd be leaning towards the Ibanez (barring any of those reliability issues you mentioned).

As already mentioned Laneys are very british amps not very modern sounding.
The Ibanez thermion imo is way too solid-state sounding to be worth it's price. And it's definitely not like an Engl Fireball in my experience.
Opeth don't really use Laneys for their metal tone. They use clean laneys for max headroom and get all their distortion and effects out of Boss GT-6 units.
If Laneys are for you depends on what kind of metal you play.

My experience disagrees. I have a buddy who owns the Fireball and to my ears the Ibanez sounded VERY much like it. Very sizzly with lots of gain. Quality-wise (tone and build), I'd definitely opt for the Engl. But they both sounded similar for me. Which happened to be a sound that didn't work for my style. I much prefered the Engl Richie Blackmore head, because it was much more brown. In fact, I don't know that I've ever heard a head do ACDC as well as I was able to dial in that Blackmore.

Laneys can do metal, but you need to be careful of which types of metal you really play. Listen to opeths blackwater park. That is the VH100R and the GH100/50L amps. I had the combo version of the VH100R and it nails that albums tone, so i dont want to hear the distortion only comes from the GT6. It DOES, but its very transparent and sounds almost exactly like the amps distortion. All i recommend is getting an OD pedal like the Zakk Wylde and you will be set for any style of music you want to play on it.

I love my VH-100R for modern drop tuned metal. It sounds great to me. Has just the right amount of gain, but is very clear at the same time. I highly recommend them. I run mine with 6l6's in the power amp, which really changes the voice of the amp. With EL-34's the Laney's do sound very much like a marshall. However with 6l6's it is actually closer to a Mesa IMO, but doesn't have that nasty buzziness and lack of mids.

I played through my EC-1000 with JB-59 set for the Laney. The other guitarist played through a Viper-1000 with Emg 81-60 set.

I once spent all day in my local guitar shop and just played around on different amps and in my opinion and to my ears the Ibanez sounded just really hissy. One of their Laney's sounded real good but like said above it's really old school Brit sounding, I put an OD pedal behind ( I forgot the company) and it was more contemp soundin. It's all preferance. Wheather you want to play Marshall, Mesa, KranK, or even Behringer *shivers* the choice is up to you and your ears.

Iommi used Laney Supergroup on the first three albums(if not more) with dallas rangemaster terble booster. Iommi since mid nineties has his own signature model, the only sig Laney has ever made, based on VH100 I believe. I have a AOR 50MV Pro-Tube Lead, it can do WAY MORE than traditional 80's metal once you start Pulling bass and trebble(push/pull boosts) and put an OD pedal infront, I love what Spina's TS9 does to it. JJ high gain ECC83s and Gold Pins really smooth it out, and you get really different tones just by fooling around which V you put it in. As far as non modern tones, the guy from HIM uses VH100, so did up untill recently the guy from Angra, point proven.
