Laney VH100R

I went to the local shop to do some amp testing and stumbled upon this. Anybody have any experience with this one? Pros and cons? I thought it was pretty nice, but the testing situation wasn't really the ideal one.

Paul Gilbert, on of the amps of the dude from Stratovarious, the dude from HIM, one the amps used by Kiko Loureiro of Angra, Mattias Ekludh, If you want pure metal but not typical marshal/mesa metal, Laneys and Engls are your choice.

john 5 used them, at least before he was john 5. i have the combo and its excellent. best cleans and a hard rocking distortion channel. they can get a bit of hiss when not playing, but not too bad.

Re: Laney VH100R

Yep, I was wanting to get one of these heads after owning the combo for some time, but recently the ones on ebay just were not priced right. Great sound, but you need a very clean OD or a hard pushing pickup to get the high gain tone. Can do any style of music, no problem. Very fun to play with.

Re: Laney VH100R

Once I get mine, its next on the list, I am sure my invader in the bridge and Spina Screamer would create some major "lets invade Poland" typa tones.

Re: Laney VH100R

hehe yea, just make sure you dont use that cab with T75s or your ears will be rejecting it.

Dude tell me about it .... they so dont fit my style man, I've decided though to see how my AOR will work out with KT77s before I make decision on the speakers, I am actually thinking of selling the marshall and getting a G-flex again. Lexicon Lambda/Mics, KT77, cab/speakers, and only then VH100R, life sucks. I think that pushed with something like invader/fullshred/customcustom through a good OD VH100R through a G-Flex 4X12 would totally own everything that's outhere.

Re: Laney VH100R

I used to have a G-Flex 2-12, didn't really do it for me, it was kinda "boxy" sounding. FWIW, I tried a Mark IV, Rivera S120, and a Laney GH50 into it. I'm much happier with my Avatar 2-12s. Of course, some of that may have been the speakers in it, I didn't try changing those out.

Re: Laney VH100R

same speakers, definitly more boom to it. id love to know how it sounds with different speakers

Re: Laney VH100R

I got to try one out in the shop, although it wasn't the best of situations. The clean channel was nice, warm and full. The od seemed versatile, although I didn't really get to test it thoroughly enough. I got to test it moderately loud, at least. I'll have to go and give it another shot later on, maybe with a guitar of my own.

Re: Laney VH100R

The guitar and its pickups will make a huge difference in this amp when plugged straight in, and make sure to always use the low input with humbuckers and the hi with singles. The cab will also, but it is hard to say what cab you should use when playing it in the shop. When I was searching for a good cab when I had the VC50, I had no idea what to get, never went to a shop to play through any cabs, etc. So what gave me the confidence to buy one blind? Splawn. $400 to my door, $110 for the speakers. Will never sell it. Made such a huuuuuge difference in sound for the Laney. I stayed up till 3 am playing it in my apartment the same day I got it, it sounded so good. Neighbors finally gave me a visit by nearly breaking down my door. At the time I had loaded the combo with two eminence Legend V12s which really cut down the sharp highs, and in the Splawn cab they just sounded awesome. Could use some more lows at high volume, but the point is to make sure you dont leave a weakest link in the chain. The VH100R will be picky about everything that touches it. I think I just made myself gas for one again.. lol.

I see you don't have it anymore??? What made you sell it? How'd you compare your 6505 to it?

Re: Laney VH100R

I sold (traded) it because I was wanting a real azz kicking rhythm tone, and the Laney couldnt quite get there. The lead tones, clean, crunch, etc were so great though. I really was looking for a true high gain rhythm tone though, and when I played the 6505+ it had it. Grind, punch, response, tightness, it was all there. When I tried it in the store through its own 4x12 it sounded absolutely monstrous. Gutsy as hell.. the Laney just couldnt get that aggressive, even with an overdrive pedal. Plus I dont gig or anything, but a few of my friends play and we jam here and there. We have a place to play that is practically limitless in terms of volume, so wattage is not an issue. Basically I dont have to worry about a certain sound, so I can play with different amps all I want that is within budget. So what do I miss? Everything but the high gain rhythm tones. I just sold the 6505+, and picked up a Mesa DC-5 head, hopefully I will get it late next week. It actually has a true clean channel as well as a toggled rhythm/lead channel, and I hear it is balls to the wall high gain also. The clean channel and the fizzy quality of the 6505+ is what pressured me to sell it and opt for the Mesa. This will be my first Mesa, I only played a triple recto of my cousins, and a F50 combo in the store. Enough rambling.. hehe.
