Laney's SuperGroup

Talk to me about this one, Laney brothers. Would be fare to say that this like the Laney's equivalent of JMP or maybe even a Plexi ???

Re: Laney's SuperGroup

From what I've heard it is better than either of those amps and is basically the ultimate british amp for classic sounds. Granted I haven't played one but I have never heard a bad review or dislike.

Re: Laney's SuperGroup

So far I really like what I am hearing, may be this is really should be my next target ..... does anyone have links to good sound clips of good condition unmoded Supergroup ???

Re: Laney's SuperGroup

You need to find Plexi Palace Forum. I don't have the URL anymore,But if google it you may find it. There are a few fellas over there in the know about the Super Groups.:)

Re: Laney's SuperGroup

A bit darker, perhaps a tad more open sounding, the Partridge iron likely has a bit to do with that. pushes over 600 on the plates, so you gotta tube em wisely. I would LOVE to own one. A couple here in town that I drool over everytimg I see them.

In town ??? where is your town, and I am curious how much are they going for, I've been to PlexiPalace forum, it is pretty slow, I did not find any soundclips there. That patridge chip, heard quite a bit about and how it was the main thing behind SuperGroup's tone/Iommi's darktone. Are they still being made ? Do AORs have them too, to me my sounds dark but if I can make it in to a SuperGroups on roids(patridge with AORs preamp gain) I would love to try.

Re: Laney's SuperGroup

the last one i saw on ebay sold for around 900-1100, i think, a few months ago. The guy also had a supergroup tube poweramp for sale

Maaaan .... do you think the thing is in as good of a condition as the guys says ... even with shipping to the U.S. its still might come under $1000. .... if only I did not have other stuff that I need to do/get first ... I would assume SuperGroup does not have EFX loop ?

what about my patridgechip question ???
Thanks Dudes.

I am in Minneapolis, prices are 1200 to 1500 for each of them...if I recall.... A bit too high.

The AOR and early Laney SG really are not similiar voiced amps. The Partridge transformers have a lovely sound. I have a late 60s Kelly head with Partridge iron and it has an open character coupled with a really nice fullness that I love. The AOR was built to be an 800 clone with a couple eq tricks where as the 60s Laneys were very much their own amp. Stock, I don't think my AOR came anywhere close to any of my non master heads. After I changed several cap values and lowered the filtering on it, I ended up with an amp I really dug. More open and natural sounding.... If you are inclined to mess with your Laney, I would throw one or two 12At7s in the mix, and go for a pre tube with a darker tone. Can really do wonders for that amp.
