Laptop recording solutions

Well, i'm fairly new to the world of recording, but have been playing guitar for a good 6 years now. I only have my laptop, so anything PCI based is out of the question. My current gear is a LP studio and an Engl 530 pre. So far i've looked at the E-MU 1616, or slightly simpler the USB 2.0 Audigy 2 NX by creative. This would be for laying down guitar tracks only so far. Any one used either of these products before or has any suggestions?

Cheers

Ail

Re: Laptop recording solutions

I would stick to either a USB 2.0 or Firewire recording card. There are plenty of good options, it depends how much you want to spend.

I'd stay away from Audigy/consumer cards. They are optimized for listening and not for recording.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

I really like my black box if you only need to record the guitar. The mic input works good and is simple enough but the software is powerful enough to make stuff that sounds good (if only i could play hehe).

Re: Laptop recording solutions

I'm leaning towards the E-MU 1616, it's a laptop CB card interface, anyone have any experience with these?

Re: Laptop recording solutions

can you use pcmcia?

i use an audigy 2 zs notebook card.. it's got low latency, so i can use it for guitarrig.. that's about all i need!

Creative blows.

Do you have a FireWire port? That's the best route.

If you must go with E-mu, get something with ADAT in/outs, and make sure it's the "m" model (1616m, 1212m, etc.). Those have much better converters.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

I use a M-Audio MoblePre USB w/ Sony Acid Studios.

Acid is really easy to use and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other program, but it works great for recording and editing.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

I was looking at the M-Audio Firewire solo, read a few good reviews and seems reasonably priced.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

Buy a toneport and you will be very happy!
And you don't have to carry your whole rig when you just want to jam or record some riffs!
toneport is a great device ,stable and portable. The UX2 version has phantom power too.
But if you want to record more professional ,go with the Firepod ,or saphire.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

Alesis Multimix Firewire 8 Audio Interface (even has 4 XLR mic inputs w/Phantom power) comes w/Cubase LE (but you can use whatever software you want). Built in EQ, auxilary, etc. I just purchased one and love it, I ditched the Mbox for it, cause of the latency. Records in 24 bit/48khz

$299 - $50 mail in rebate

Re: Laptop recording solutions

Another Toneport user here. Comes with the software, too. What I like about it is the capability to mic your cab or use the amp sims and effects. And I can practice/play through it with headphones at night without disturbing anyone.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

And you just want to record guitars? No future expandability?

If so, then Toneport is your best bet. If not...

Budget? What everyone here has been recommending is super-budget equipment, and it won't churn out very good results.

M-Audio makes good gear - I've owned a bunch and I really like it.

Listen to "Gold's Not Enough" here http://www.myspace.com/anotherblackseason - the vocals (SM57) and the guitars except the crunch chorus guitars were recorded with a Toneport. The crunch chorus guitars were Toneport into an amp then mic'd into a Mindprint mic pre.

It would be used to record guitars and vocals, with possible expansion for bass in the future.

Re: Laptop recording solutions

Are you able to record without using any of the amp models on the toneport?I'd like to be able to record straight from my 530. Whats the build quality like? It'll be traveling round a bit. Looks promising so far though.
