Anyone know why this one is handwritten on the label instead of stating "JB Model" ? Thanks.

Re: Late 70's JB label

Well, for a start, the pickup does not appear to have an embossed baseplate. (Really old Duncan humbuckers sometimes had the old SD pickup rewind service self-adhesive label instead.)

I do not know whether it is a lens aberration or something but, in your photograph of the bobbins, the black one appears wider (and of a different pole spacing) to the creme bobbin. The other detail that catches my eye is the little area of plastic molding flash at the bottom of the square hole.

Looking at the photograph of the underside of your pickup, the brass fastening screws are spaced differently for each bobbin. Again, the creme bobbin appears smaller than the black one.

Funk, I think you're over-analyzing the camera distortions/angle...

John, I have an original late-'70s JB ("The JB Model") here that I can compare with the one you posted above...

The brass screws appear to be correct, as is the finish on the base plate. Interestingly enough, the stamping markings on the mounting tabs are identical on mine (in other words, the tooling marks where the tabs were bent).

Furthermore, the bobbins on mine also have the square holes like that one.

The label size and placement is also spot on to my "The JB Model" pickup's own label. However, I have seen the top layer of these early labels separate. It's possible that this happened and someone hand wrote the model name in its place. Might be worth reaching out to Seymour to see if he ever marked pickups like that (I've never seen it, though).

Assuming the DC resistance matches up, it appears to be a legitimate first-gen JB to me.

masta, what color is the coil wire on yours? i would think it would be purple suggesting pe, the one in the pic looks yellow suggesting formvar. it could just be the pic but looking in the square hole you can see it pretty clearly

Nope, not purple. Same as OP's...

I can only work with the data provided. GI, GO.

Masta, thanks for posting the pics of your pup and letting me know about the label thing on how you have seen them separate. I have never personally seen that happen before. I have seen where the letter stamped smaller square labels used after these longer labels has worn off. I thought of the same thing- maybe Seymour or someone at the company for a long time would know if it was being tracked. Another idea- A player wrote "JB" on it along with the last 4 numbers of his social number as a identifying characteristic in case of guitar theft- that could be also. I do not know why "5821" would be written on it... Thanks.

Re: Late 70's JB label

I also have an old 70's JB, double cream as it would happen, that has the same sticker as mast'c. The 5821 could be anything. A stock number, an order number for a custom wind or a rewind/repair. I bet a picture in an email to SD customer service will yield an answer in a few days.
