Late beginner practice routine

Re: Late beginner practice routine

Just as with any art, copy the Masters. Learn their rules. Then, when you find that you have, to your own satisfaction, throw the rules away and play what's in your head.

Re: Late beginner practice routine

another problem is the most songs i like are in other tunings lol. how will learning the building blocks of music (theory) in standard will help me?

Re: Late beginner practice routine

You just play the song how it exists in sound, not tab. For example, I play in D standard, so if I want to play a song that goes D G, I play an E shape and an A shape. Music theory doesn't change based on how the guitar is tuned, the notes are still the notes, only the tab or fingerings change.

I'd focus more on learning songs -- learning to play them from beginning to end, as if you were performing.

As you do that, you'll learn everything else. Or at least, everything else worth learning.

Guitars weren't invented so we could play scales.

There are different "different" tunings

Eb Standard - just 1/2 step down
Or D Standard, just a whole step down.

You either play like you would except everything sounds lower, or you transpose by using moveable forms.

And then there are things like Drop D - just standard with a lowered six string. You make some easy modifications to chord form choices, and pay attention to the scale forms.

And then we have the guys who threw the book out....U2, Goo Goo Dolls, etc...And the open slide tuning Blues guys. And 7/8 string user-metal guys....

And here is the thing....

On a guitar - it isn't theory that's the problem. As was said - theory is theory. It is APPLYING it across and vertically and diagonally to the guitar!
The intervals, the tuning, the repeated notes etc make guitar a very odd beast indeed!

The theory is all pretty simple - + 1/2 step here, - a half step there a b or # 3rd, 4th, 5th, or whatever.

Now - picking a string and finger to that....there is the challenge!
