Late NGD and request for help

Hello all,

***WARNING: Long Post Ahead***

I mostly lurk around here because I value the knowledge and opinions of the forumites as a whole. This spring, I purchased a Godin Redline 3. I got this guitar because I love the neck and feel of the Godin SD that I bought from member Florbastang and wanted something a little more "hot rodded". I need some advice, but first I want to provide a little review of the Redline.

Let me just say that I love the neck of this thing even better than the SD. The flatter 16" radius (as compared to 12" for the SD) of the Redline feels great and the jumbo frets are nicely dressed. The action is low but there isn't buzzing anywhere on the neck. The guitar feels great to play, but I am not sold on the EMG pickups yet. I may swap them out, but I want to give it some more time first. I did flip them around so the 85 is at the bridge and the 81 is at the neck. I may buy a 60A for the neck, but the jury is still out. The guitar also comes with Grover quick release straplock style buttons which is a nice touch.

The big problem I am having is with the Floyd Rose licensed low profile style bridge. The E and A wound strings keep breaking in the bridge after only a couple weeks use. I have a couple others guitars with OFR style bridges, but have never had this issue before. What happens is that the core of the string breaks in portion of the string that gets locked into the saddle. This usually happens when I pull up the bar and then the string unravels. I have tried 6 sets of strings from 4 different companies (GHS, DR, Ernie Ball & D'addario) and the same thing happens to either the E or A strings every time.

Mind you I am not Steve Vai and don't yank on the thing. I rarely use the bar to raise the pitch more than a half step or so and mostly just use it for light to moderate vibrato since I don't play a lot of leads. The bridge looks like it was painted as opposed to being plated or anodized as there is a little overspray in the area where the string sits. But that is from my untrained eye. I thought that overspray might have been the problem and tried to scrap it out a little with a small screwdriver, but it did not help and broke another A string last night.

Can anyone help??? Has anyone else ever had this type of problem??? What was your solution? I will try to load up some pics when I get home tonight so you can see what i mean. I thought about dropping $50 on some replacement saddles, but I wanted to ask here before doing that.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Dan

Re: Late NGD and request for help

sounds like you have an Ibanez
you may have a bur on the saddle
before replacing the string
look closely at where the string rides across it
a touch to sand paper to smooth it out
then a bit of chap stick to slick it up

is this one of those moments where i can recommend soldering the ball end of a string?

and chap stick eh? might help with the string breakage from my jaguar.
