Picked up a used JSX from GC. I have been using the XXX for past ten years as my main amp, but I'm not a metal player. I like the xxx for lead, but it is a challenge to get low and mid-gain tones. Have been using pedals for those.
So the JSX is really similar, which is fine, and the crunch channel does not feel as pressured, which works better for low/mid gain, although I still consider it a lead channel.
In general the amp seems to have less bass than the XXX which is a good thing, although the active eq does not seem quite as sensitive/versatile. (Maybe i'll keep the XXX?)
Two questions about the JSX:
1) The low input jack seems to roll off the presence from the signal. It can make a bright humbucker sound really jazzy and full on the clean channel, or smooth out a single coil and make it better for lead. Is this how they came from the factory, or is this possibly a mod from previous owner. I think I like it.
2) I seem to remember there was a trick where you could use a switch into one of the front inputs that would let you A/B between the two inputs. (Something like put a continuous switch into the low input, and when you turn it on/off, it alternates the other input between the two.)
I like the look of the JSX better than the new XXX-2, so figured I would get one. Late to the party I know, but all the recordings I have done are with the XXX. I didnt want something different, just more versatile.
