Left handed pickups

Hey guys....

Friend approached me to replace pickups in his guitar...I didn't think anything of it, but I totally forgot he is a lefty. I know SD makes left handed pickups.

Its an american strat and we were going to put in Surfers with Custom TH bridge or THs with Custom TH bridge.

Do the Antiquities come in left handed? If so I would assume most stores wouldnt carry the left handed version. Any ideas where to order?

Thanks,

Re: Left handed pickups

Hmmm .... good question. I know they don't list LH Antiquities in the price list or catalog like they do for the standard staggered pole pickups and I have never had anybody request them before. I could certainly ask one of the Duncan CSR's.

Thanks, that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Left handed pickups

Except for staggered all other pups are universally useable for righty and lefty. You only need a LH model to keep the pole staggering correct without reversing out. For flat poles it doesn't matter, so there are no other LH models. if you put them in a lefty guitar just flip them around, shouldn't matter with flat pole singles or bucker with symmetrical coils(unbalanced coils might be different but you can still put them in any way you want)

Re: Left handed pickups

the pups he is talking about using have staggered poles, worst case scenario flip the thing over. the wires will come out the wrong side but it will work fine

This depends on the guitar routing. The baseplate is not symetrical, see the photo link. If you have an old style true single coil routing you likely will not be able to flip it.

I'm sending an e-mail to Scott at SD this morning to see if LH is available and at what cost.

Re: Left handed pickups

Flipping them 180 degrees should work fine -- as others have said, the only issue would be the cavity routing. The 180 degree turn won't affect tone or phasing at all.

Re: Left handed pickups

I recently went through this as a lefty, and frankly changed pickup specs. From my memory, I concur with the other guys. It only matters for staggered poles, diferent magnet combos such as 5/2's and on Tele Bridge Pu's where the mounting plate isn't symetrical.

very true, didnt think about that

Re: Left handed pickups

Yes I was aware of the staggered issue. Thus the problem being what he wants is staggered. Luckly to say the least it is at least a Strat and not a Tele.

I know according to the Duncan FAQ :

Do you make pickups for left-handed guitars?
Lefty pickups only apply in staggered pole piece pickup models. All of our Staggered single coil pickups are available in Left Hand Stagger at no extra charge. Other than that, there is nothing about a lefty pickup that is different from a righty.

I guess the only question being then, do the Antiquities come in lefty.

Oh so glad I am right handed..

Re: Left handed pickups

Appreciate your efforts in this.....

I'm wondering if I'm just going to have to sacrifice and go with APS 2's or SSL-2's and Twangbanger or maybe something like Custom Flat and just flip em.

I would assume 99% of places out there don't carry lefty pickups

Re: Left handed pickups

I was interested in some lefty stagger Antiquities maybe a couple months ago and was told they are not made in lefty stagger. I remember STRATDELUXER97 saying that he installed some righty antiquities, just flipped them 180 degrees to make the stagger correct for left-handed string orientation. He mentioned that he only had to remove a small amount of wood from the pickup cavity, so i guess you may want to consider that. Hope this helps a little.

True, but any of the dealers here on the forum are happy to place special orders and lead time is probably in the two week range. If you are set on the LH pickups it's worth the small wait.

Re: Left handed pickups

I ordered a set of Lefthand antiquities for a customer years ago through the CS. It´s definitely possible, but I don´t think 1998 prices still apply. Essentially I think the question is whether they have moved to production or whether they´re still a 100% CS deal. Back then we paid about 500-600 German Marks total for a set of 3 ;)
