Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

It was the proverbial lifting the blanket off the amp.

I would say the pots had more impact, swapping the magnet was the cherry on top

Thanks for that.

I might just have a little cake for know and left the cherry for another time. You have saved my Les Paul.

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

Since boominess is your problem (and it *always* is with a factory setup IMO), get rid of those springs and screw the P90 in as far as it will go, then raise the pole pieces to get your volume to match the bridge p/u. You will notice a marked decrease in mud and boominess.

I would still play with this - lot's can be had. :)

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

Sorry to bring that thread up again. But i have the same Problem. I will try replace the Pots with 500k. Is there a certain brand I should use ? And what is the suggested height of a Bridge P90 ?

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

They've been doing the pickup mount inserts for many years. I have an early 90's LP Special like that. I also like it because you can adjust pickup height. I installed P-90 in my Melody Maker and went this rout.

Cool you got OD caps. only impact of it being 600v is that it takes up a lot of space.

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

Will the 50s wiring with 500k pots help clearing the tone up ? And what type and value should i use for the capacitor ? And should the pots be linear or non-linear ? I got 2 500k non-linear for the tone in my guitar. And i would be glad if i could use those.

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

50s wiring, 500k non-linear (audio taper) pots, .022uf caps = good to go.

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

Does it have to be Orange Drops. Or do other caps the job good enough ?

They don't have to be ODs, any cap of the same value will work just fine. Most would view having OD caps fitted as standard as being a good thing. I use them as a matter of course when I'm replacing stuff in my guitars.

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

Should i use CTS TVT or stock Gibson 500k Pots ? And do they affect the tone at all when the pot is on 10 ? I cant imagine how.

Re: Les Paul 60s Tribute - unusual factory parts

I've heard that Gibson uses a lower grade of CTS pots, but I'm sure they are just fine. I routinely replace my pots with CTS (almost always use 500k).

Any type cap will work, the value is the important thing. Some people say they can hear a difference in the type of cap they use...I can't. But ther is an obvious difference in the value. I use Orange Drops as a matter of course just because they are easy to work with and look cool. I have absolutely no complaints about the tone and they are great quality and relatively inexpensive.
