Les Paul Bridge Pickup Recommendation Replace 59N

Hi,

My Heritage H150 Les Paul has SD 59 pickups.
They are great for a distorted rock tone (the bridge is especially awesome) but I'd like a change.. specifically I would like a neck pickup which is cleaner and sweeter for a blues tone. The 59n is pretty bassy and aggressive.

I'm using a supro 15w so breaks up really early with the 59

Welcome to the forum!
If you like the bridge, keep it. For the neck, you might like the Antiquity or the Jazz.

Cleaner and sweeter than a 59????

The only thing I can think of is a SETH.

I’m concerned you find a classic PAF “too much”

I've played the H150. My teacher owns one

It is indeed a VERY aggressive guitar. Bonamassa-esque tones come out of it like nobody's business

Seths or Alnico 2 Pros. My money's on Seths

You could go with Seths but I feel like modding the wiring might be a cheaper option as the 59s aren’t a bad pickup. A higher pot value or the right wiring scheme might give you those changes you want. hard to say though.

I would swap in an Alnico 3 magnet into each pickup and call it a day!

Re: Les Paul Bridge Pickup Recommendation Replace 59N

Seth is my advice. Or a cheaper magnet swap... A3 or A4

Re: Les Paul Bridge Pickup Recommendation Replace 59N

So....let me see here:

In priority:

#1 Swap mags in the 59, A3 or A4

#2 Try a 250k pot to take the aggressive top off

#3 A Seth, or perhaps a an A2P

#2 is cheap to try, but I think it's the lowest probability. Also, you can include A2 magnet in your list, as it would put you in the same ballpark as Seth/A2P. I like Seths a little better (never tried A2P), but a magnet swap is $90 cheaper and pretty close.

To cut the bass put a cap in series with the neck pickup hot lead. You'll have to experiment to get the right value.

Re: Les Paul Bridge Pickup Recommendation Replace 59N

Jazz neck
Seth neck
Phat Cat neck, though it’s not humbucking, but strangely an excellent clean even PAF type neck tone (early PAFs actually sounded like P90’s)

59 with an A4 mag is also a great fix for what ails a 59N in an LP/SG type.

Re: Les Paul Bridge Pickup Recommendation Replace 59N

The Antiquity sounds like a very cool pairing for the 59b. I also like the Jazz neck - its more modern sounding. You can try mag swaps in the neck first. Then save up and get the antiquity or Jazz.

Yeah, an A3 in the neck of a LP is sweet.

If he is happy with the 59b, I'd leave it alone or go A4 first.

I did a Jazz Neck A3 and a 59b A4 and the combo is awesome. The two in the middle position is the best I ever heard a LP with both on.
