Les Paul Copies

Re: Les Paul Copies

These have been getting popular on Ebay lately....tons of them.
As for specific brands?

Its hard to say, without feeling them. I got a Hohner Proffesional L-59, based on a LP Custom...its so nice. Set neck, nice inlays, nice binding, long tenon(not that I care) Nice wood, nice finish...I put in good pickups and electrics and it is awesome! I paid 160 for it at a pawn shop.

Re: Les Paul Copies

Well, as a new guitar I really want a Les Paul style guitar. A real Les Paul is really out of my price range, so I figured I should try some copies. I just want some opinions on some brands that get a tone that is pretty close to a Les Paul.

Re: Les Paul Copies

Are Dillion Les Paul copies better than an Epiphone Les Paul? From what I have heard about the Epiphone's quality in wood isn't that great. They use 2-piece necks? Is a 2 piece neck bad? I do not think I have ever played a 2-pieced neck.

Re: Les Paul Copies

From what I read on the website Dillion uses a solid mahogany body, that sounds alot better than the mulitple piece bodies used by Epiphone. Does anyone use a Dillion Les Paul copy, or have used one? The finishes look amazing IMO.

Re: Les Paul Copies

There are TONS of copies...

Check out
-Edwards
-Tokai
-Orville
-Burny

These are all good guitars...the prices vary, I happen to think that the Edwards are THE bect thing for the money going...I actually like them better that most Gibsons I have played/owned, not to mention I have seen them as cheep as $700.00 plus shipping.

For the record, Lew has just informed that he did some upgrades on an Epiphone (new pups, poys, switch, and a real ggod set up) and said it was great when he was done...Lew playes a Historic 59 RI...plus Lew knows his stuff, if he said it was a good guitar, go with it.

The Tokai's are KILLER guitars, but word has gotten around and the price has gone up.

Orville is like MIJ Gibson, Orville is Gibson's plant in Japsn, great guitars, prices going up fast!!!

Burny's are good too, made by Fernandes, and very well built, I don't care for the pickups, but I like Duncans!

+1.... I have a goldtop which is really nice for the money... as far as price/quality ratio goes, they are a fantastic value...

Hey..

Yeah I agree that it would help to know how much u wanna spend. But as a suggestion i think Les Pauls from Epiphone arent that bad for its price range. I've played the Zakk Wylde Custon, Gothic and Standard..
From the 3 I like the playability of the Zakk Wylde due to its "bare" neck. The stock pickups are ok... EMG HZ... but it depends on what kinda music you play..

Re: Les Paul Copies

If you going to spend around $500-$550, then I would defiantely suggest an ESP EC400 ATS. Feels almost exactly like a Les Paul, Grover tuners, Earvana nut, and best of all, Duncans, a JB bridge, and a 59 neck. Plus you can get it from American Music Supply for 3 easy payments. I've bought 4 guitars from them and never had a problem with even one. The only downside about the ESP, is that it is only available in 2 colors, black and goldtop.

Re: Les Paul Copies

I've got two Greco's and the both kick serious tail.

The big upside is that they've both had a solid 20 years worth fo the electronics vintaging; they're mellowing nicely tonally.

I think I spent less than $900 for the both of them combined...

Re: Les Paul Copies

Tokai makes a hell of a Les paul!!! I dont want to step on anyones toes but, the one I played wasnt a love rock, it said Les Paul on it but, In my opinion it was alot better than any actual Gibson I have played.

Re: Les Paul Copies

Today I went to music store and tried out a Dillion and an Epiphone and I liked the dillion alot more and was also cheaper :). I want to try Tokai, how did you guys get a hold of a tokai before you bought one?

I believe there's a retailer in Canada that handles Tokai. Due to copyright issues I don't think anyone in the United States handles Tokai or the other brands.

Your best bet for getting one of the other brands is probably through eBay or through a Japanese retailer.

Now, the big complication is that the dollar just took a major nise-dive against the Yen. It's going to be more expensive than typically if you buy any time in the very near future.

Got mine off E Bay from a Canadian dealer of Tokai guitars back in 2002...Mine is so so scary close to a 59 les paul reissue...
