A Custom with a maple cap is a Standard with fancier inlays and binding.

I like both. I actually owned both at the same time once and A/B them back and forth on same amp, both had same Duncan's in them. The maple cap one had a tad more top end bite and clarity, the mahogany one was a tad warmer and softer attack. But they were so close that without having both there at the same time to A/B, I doubt you could really tell.

Spot on.I agree with this.
I've had both too.

Yeah totally agree - but I'm sure that's true comparing just about any two similar guitars with a top difference. But the differences do exist, so why not choose the one that better suits your ear?

I've heard two Customs into the same rig - one maple cap and one solid mahogany. The 'hog was noticeably thicker sounding with a stronger mid. If I already had a Standard, I'd want a 'hog Custom. If you want a guitar with more top end zing then get a maple capper.

I see A LOT of complaints from 57 custom RI owners saying they can't make them sound right.

I would be very careful with that.

A 'hog cap is vintage-correct, Mr. vinta9e. lol

Lol as much as you want, sir. I generally have a preference towards maple carved tops. My ears love how they work with mahogany cores and ebony fretboard. When executed right, makes for a rich, present, full, tight and piano-like sounding guitar.

I can't help thinking it's a godly recipe. My ears don't understand "blasphemy". :beerchug:

Custom w/ MAple cap is a Standard with brighter top AND snappier attack via Ebony board.

traditionally its a Honduran Mahogany neck and body with a: maple cap rosewood board (standard) or a mahogany cap and an ebony board (custom)

BUT

Gibson is using African Mahogany these days...dark, heavy...needs to be hollowed out usually. to compensate for that that, I'd go maple cap and ebony board.

Honestly, how long did the LPC come with mahogany top? How many were made? This is getting ridiculous.
