Les Paul Pickguard Yes or No

Re: Les Paul Pickguard Yes or No

Lu, just because you are a woman doesn't mean I won't pimp slap you just like any other bozo on this forum (politically incorrect as that may be, and in a metaphorical sense, of course). Don't you EVER put a guard on that. There - dilema solved. New thread.

My LP's are half and half. some guards, some not. all depends on the look I'm after. But the birdseye and flame do not have one, and neither does an all black.

Re: Les Paul Pickguard Yes or No

Darn it Lu, I was perfectly happy with the scratch plate on my Tokai, now I'm tempted to take it off :)

Now where did I leave my screw driver...

Solid colors - always.
Plaintops - always.
"Pretty" wood - always.

I rest my palm on the bridge, and my fingertips on the guard. On a LP, with the top carve and all, it's less comfortable for me with no guard.

And, of course, everyone should do what they want. :)

Re: Les Paul Pickguard Yes or No

I know that this is an old thread, but I am hoping that my input may help some other les paul owner.

I have a 2008 Les Paul Standard in Iced Tea Burst. I also have never had a pickguard on the guitar and didn't want to drill the beautiful top.

I bought a clear pickguard from http://www.bobbyleesignatureseries.com/ that doesn't require holes to be drilled into the guitar body.

* his website is all flashy and seriously sucks. Though I am not associated with it. I apologize for it.

You can see a pic of mine here...

I've never really seen the top of a solid-body electric as something that needs to be protected from picks. Not the way I play, anyway. It might look cool, like on a jazz box or a really classy black LP, maybe even a Vintage Sunburst, but usually I can leave it. I like wood and metal, with relatively little plastic in the mix.

Re: Les Paul Pickguard Yes or No

This is always a tough call for me. I think my 2004 "Latte Cream" Standard would look outstanding with a pick guard. But it is hard to screw up the courage to drill for one. It looks good without, though.

I guess I would just leave it as stock. Or get one of those floating guards.

How many players' picks would even come into contact with that area on a Les Paul's top?

Re: Les Paul Pickguard Yes or No

IMHO, for the most part, yes, but I also lack the balls to drill the top and side for one on my Classic Plus, like Itsabass. I think they look odd without, like something's missing.

Bobby Lee makes cream colored free floating pickguards too. I bought the clear, but there are times I wish I had bought the matching cream colored ones instead.

I like mine because it's almost invisible, but sometimes I wish I had the classic look with a matching cream-colored pickguard. It's not important enough for me though to buy another one, though I could.

Yeah, those are the floating ones I was talking about.

Does the cream have a layer of clear over it? And are they made with straight sides, or only beveled?

My Paul is scratched up right where the pickguard would cover, below the high E, between the pickups. And in the same spot above the low E.

I dunno. My clear one is beveled, but it is the only one of his I have ever seen firsthand.

For what its worth, the first one he sent me cracked when I tightened the screws on it. He told me to throw it away and he sent me a new one straight away, so he is a pretty good guy.

Send him an email and ask.

Yeah, it looks like they are all beveled, which is why I haven't already bought one. I also don't like the look of them with that clear plastic lamination. It wouldn't match. I will just rig up my own bracket system some day, as I have planned to do all along.

I think this looks really nice! Best from both worlds. It adds the pickguard shape so it doesn't look like something is missing but again not hiding the wood and the overall sleekness of the non-pickguard versions. A really great idea.
