With a pickguard it's like wearing underwear, hot, sweaty and sticky, which I hate. But I have a problem with the two holes, which are ugly so I leave it on. But I still hate underwear though.

But I like the look,on some.I've got mine double-sided taped down,wouldn't do that on a Gibby,tho...

Take them off.

They look slicker without a pickguard. It looks a bit clumsy with them, for lack of a better word.

I agree, but I like the pickguard, hence my affinity for the clear, screwless one.

on goldtops or black Les Pauls I like the guard. Anything else I prefer no pick guard.

This, I hate when people with LP's with killer flames on them hide the finish with the pickguard....

To me, it all depends on the pickups. IMO, Lesters don't like right with covered pickups and no guard. Same thing in reverse, I prefer no pickguard with uncovered pickups. Finish also dictates, to a degree.

On my LP, I took it off. No real big reason other than it's easier to clean with it off. But it's all a matter of taste.

I'd say a combination of this and quality of the top. With a great top, I'd remove the guard and the covers.

The rules aren't strict, but this is how I see it:
Solid color -> pickguard
Flame top -> no pickguard
no pickup covers -> no pickguard
