Les Paul Pickup Opinions Wanted...

Re: Les Paul Pickup Opinions Wanted...

yes

I like the 500T, just use the guitar volume knob to tame it

I'm following this thread because I am in the same position as the OP (w/a LP Classic). I found that this does indeed work well, although I'm probably going to go with a more vintage type pup set anyway.

Re: Les Paul Pickup Opinions Wanted...

A Distortion (for all practical purpsoes - a 500T) has pretty decent clean sound as ceramics go, and can totally be volume tamed. I will also add, the treble rolloff when the volume drops is a GOOD thing for that pup. Don't do a 50's mod on the bridge. Neck only!!!

Re: Les Paul Pickup Opinions Wanted...

OK, quick update: Put the Pearly Gates bridge pickup in the neck position, kept the 500T in the bridge position, added nickel covers to both. Net: It's awesome.

The Pearly Gates bridge in the neck position gives it enough oomph to match the heat of the 500T and it's not too dark, not too bright, it's just right. It sounds... "muscular" - it's like a GTO in guitar form. I hate to say it, but it's that Billy Gibbons La Grange tone. Granted, my rig is going to be different from yours, every guitar is different, it's all about how you set it up, it's all in the fingers, blah, blah, blah. But I'm VERY pleased. FYI, I'm playing through a '65 Deluxe Reverb RI and use a Marshall Bluesbreaker I pedal dimed, but even clean, it's a great tone.
