Aye, this is incorrect. There are some "special" studio models out there that do not have a maple cap, but the base model les paul studio does.

this is interesting... thanks for the correction! i always thought they had no maple cap, for back when i was wanting to buy me a les paul all the studios i tried didn't have any so it stuck to me that studios didn't have any.. but is actually very cool so the only real difference is cosmetics then, sweet

Discounting aesthetics alone, that are very obvious even to the non-player. The Standard is very different in the PuP choice; the Standard comes with Burstbuckers while the Studio uses 498 and 500s. Additionally, new to 2008 is a printed circuit board for the electronics, makes changing PuPs a real pain in the butt without first replacing the electronics.
If you are interested in the Les Paul, you really should also consider the Traditional. The Traditional is actually modeled after the early 90s Standard with 57 PAF PuPs. IMO a far superior guitar than the Standard, uses industry standard electronics and it is weight relieved instead of chambered (hollowed). And are generally a few hundred less than the Standard.
Best thing to do is play both, see which you like better. There really is a pretty significant tone and playability between the two you mentioned.

I have an older Studio and Standard. To me, I'm not entirely sure it was worth the extra $$$ for the few "upgrades" to the Standard.

The Studio rocks just as well.

standards also come with different pickups, but IMO they're not better, just different. (BBpros in the regular standard and '57s in the traditional). studios come with the 490r/498t set(which isn't half bad if you set them up right).

I thought Stds had the 498T/490R set. Didn't they used to?

Nope, they've been using Burstbuckers for quite a while until the "New 2008" model.

The Customs had 500t, 496r. At least that's what the leftover new custom I played a couple weeks ago had. I ended up with a Traditional though, partly because it was a little cheaper and partly because already have the 500t/496r combo in my Explorer. But mostly because the Traditional was a lot better player. I also own a Studio. I like the Traditional better but not by much. My Studio is a boat anchor compared to the Traditional, but I like weight. Even though the Traditional is not chambered, the weight relief still makes it lighter than the Studio, mine at least.

I have both. The Studio is a nice guitar, but the Standard kills it!

^^I agree - I've had a couple of Studios but my new (used) 2001 Standard destroys every guitar I've ever had.

Les Paul Standards switched from 490R/498T to BB Pros in 2002.

They also slimmed down the neck back shape even though they still call it a 50s neck. Makes me very glad I bought my new Standard in 2001.

I knew I wasn't dreaming that. If they'd put an A5 in the 490R, it'd be a very nice PAF with good definition, but that stock A2 can be muddy in the neck.

All Les Pauls are the same more or less. No amount of money is worth the actual differences. The only significant diff in the custom is the ebony board - and that was originally in there because the body was ALL mahogany.

And as far as pups go, if you are here reading this it wouldn't matter if they were buckers, soap bars, or a bar of actual soap. Any pup in any of our guitars is as temporary as panties on the school tramp on a Friday night.

That said, the LP standard, cream binding & all, is what a Les Paul really is. But, as I have said, a Studio is every bit the instrument from a playing perspective that any other LP is. It is all the Les Paul features that you really need.
