Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I play metal, hard rock and classic rock. I'm leaning towards the SG because it seems to be a lighter, double-cut, brighter LP, which is a good thing. Are there any advantages of an LP?

The LP is pretty well known for it's sustain. The LP also tends to have a thicker sound which I prefer for rock or metal. The disadvantage of the SG is that the placement of the strap button as well as the lightness of the body contributes heavily to neck dive on the instrument which is a huge issue when playing live. You almost have to balance the SG with your fretting hand while you're fretting which can get difficult.

As someone who's owns both an Epi SG and an Epi LP, I'd definitely go with the LP over the SG for a number of reasons, namely tone and the body weight and style.

+1. I have these 2 guitars and, despite the upper fret access, the LP is way more comfortable, specially while standing.

Brighter, clearer, more even tone. More balanced between neck and body.

I have 2 SGs and 2 Les Pauls and my SGs are not brighter than my Les Pauls.

LP's have a maple top, which gives them a more balanced tone, with some nice high end. SG's are all mahogany and have a lot of mids. That's why '59's work well in them, as the wind and the A5's produce a lot of highs and bass.

How many times has the guitarist for Black Sabbath ever came out on stage with a Les Paul?

Prefer the thinner body of the SG's. The strap pin positions are not a problem. Get a good strap and neck dive shouldn't be a problem.

Sound wise - there is a difference but the LP is like driving a 60's four door Buick as compared to a SG which resembles a 58 MG.

Play both and go with what feels right.

Advantages and disadvantages can be listed for both.

I tend to play more raunchy on a SG than a Les Paul...might be a mental thing trying to channel Angus Young lol (I feel the same way about a Tele compared to a Strat.)

Both can be tweaked to suit your needs.

the lp can have THE SOUND but not the playability
so, sg first
brighter and the guitar is plug and play
easy to make guitar solo

I recently faced the same decision between the two models that you're considering. I find both models quite playable (not all SGs have bad neck dive issues), and sonically, I can tweak either to where I'm going (hard rock end of classic rock and hard blues).

I bought the LP Studio because it had a 50s rounded profile neck. I really like that, although I'm fine with the SG neck.
