Les Paul Tone & Looks Without Having to Mortgage A House…

I’m looking for a Les Paul clone that will pull off that classic chunky tone and also look like a late 50’s/early 60’s Les Paul without having to mortgage a house just for the “Gibson” logo on the headstock… I don’t care about the brand name or where in the world it was made. I also don’t care about the electronics, as I plan to redo it all plus adding some SD 59s or Seths. What I want is a well made set-neck guitar that has great playability, sustain & tone for around 1000$ (More or less)… Anyone out there have good or bad experiences with some Les Paul type guitars you want to share or suggest a guitar that you own/played?

MIJ Tokai would get my vote. Mines got a set of PG's in but 59's or Sets are and equally good combo.

^ Do those have the really skinny bodies like some of the Eclipses?

LTD Eclipse will get you close...

Tokai / Burny / Orville / Greco will get you closer...

but i would just save money and get a awesome, older, played-in and well-loved Gibson Les Paul that you intend to hold onto for a long, long time.

You have to decide what's important to you.....looks, or sound. A good Studio with a rosewood board will get you there tonally...however it doesn't have "the look" and it seems more people than not are hung up on "the look". As a result they'll go with an Epi Standard rather a Studio.

I think the Tokais are EXCELLENT alternatives, certainly worthy of consideration.

Used Gibson Les paul Studio or if you have patience and get lucky maybe even a Standard.

Looks are for people with too much money, and most copies are just the hard way to learn that there really is a difference :D

+2. A gibson studio can be had for under a grand, easily. If you are patient, you can even find a nice white one with the gold hardware, in good condition. On stage, noobs will think it's a custom, and it will sound and play like a gibson, caus it will be one.

I have very little experience in clones, but I don't see why you wouldn't go for the original.

I didn't know they made Gibson Les Paul Studio's that looked that great or that were so affordable. Thanks, I might get a Gibson after all!

Naturally, the sound of a guitar is more important to me than looks, and from what I can tell, only the bindings are missing from the Studio's and I don't mind that at all.

I think that's exactly what I'll do... I think seeing a bunch of 3000-5000$ priced Gibson's online got me a bit angry at the Gibson brand. There's no reason not to hope to get a used Standard at a reasonable price.

Thanks to everyone who posted!

Upgrading an Epiphone was an expensive lesson in learning why you're better off buynig a Gibson.

People tend to get hung up on the expensive guitars and forget that Gibson actually produces a whole bunch of somewhat more reasonably priced guitars.
