A top-notch US made alternative to Gibson LP would be Heritage (H-150CM is the model closest to LP standard, I think). Made in the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan by some of the original Gibson staff, they are first class guitars that can be had under $1K used.

Bite the bullet and buy the Les Paul. You know you want it. There is no copy that really compares. I have a Standard & a Studio. IMHO the Studio (used) would be a cheap way to go. Good guitar, reasonably priced! The only thing you may have to do is to change the pots. Mine had 300K pots, I changed them to 500K and the guitar sounded a lot better. Saved me the need to swap pickups!

Agreed 100%! Save up the money, and get the real thing, period. You'll be happier you did.
