les paul too dark

Re: les paul too dark

They do make you rely a bit more on the amp and/or stompbox, but modern amps and stompboxes are designed to do just that.

The overall tone of a good PAF-clone is much clearer (not just brighter) and is well worth it.

Re: les paul too dark

then it sounds like PAFs are the ones for me :) i'm a stompbox whore (not afraid to admit it!), so that isn't a problem.

what's the attraction of high output pickups? helps with distortion?

what about SD antiquities... i read about them.. they sound attractive :) kinda like the burstbuckers, i suppose. they sound nice too, with uneven coil windings and all...

Re: les paul too dark

Some (all?) Les Paul Studios have 300K volume and tone pots and they allow treble to bleed through to ground even when they are turned to "10" resulting in the dull tone you are describing.

Check and see what your pots are...and change them to 500K if they are 300K or less.

Then consider new pickups if you still need 'em.

If you do, I'd recommend the PGn and Duncan Custom.

+1000000.

Change all the pots to 500k first. I went through tons of pickup swaps for years trying to get the muddiness out of my Les Paul Custom. Nothing worked until I got EMG's which came with new pots.
