Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

Ever seen one? I can't say that I have. Why is it you so rosewood on so many different style guitars, but I can recall seeing maple fretboards on anything LP shaped, or V, or Explorer... etc.

But an LP specifically. Why Not a maple fretboard?

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

Yah.

Played & held several in fact.

Most of them '70s & early 80s era Customs, maple boad w/ black block inlays.

Never seen a maple board Standard.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

Gibson only made them for a a few years, around 77-79. It is a mystery why Gibson has never gotten into maple fretboards. A lot of it has to do with the fact that those 70's necks also had maple necks, along with the maple fretboards. Maple fretboards on mahogany necks is almost unheard of for some reason.

I'm actually surprised Gibson hasn't offered more maple fretboards. I guess they don't want to go there.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

The Camo zakk has a maple fretboard if you want something more readily available, have maple necks too which means 2 counts of epic win.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

Thanks for the info.

I don't necessarily want one, but while peeing earlier it randomly crossed my mind that I had never seen one. I promptly washed my hands and posted.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

Yeah, there've been a bunch of different Norlin maple necked guitars. Marauder, Grabber, Ripper, (I think it was) "THE Les Paul" although I don't specifically remember- I'd imagine RDs as well.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

i used to have a '79 les paul with a maple neck and board pearloid block inlays. it was a really cool guitar, brighter than a typical les paul but really even toned up the neck. the 16 lbs was just waaaay to much for me to handle. i can remember jumping and catching the guitar in the chin. i sold it shortly after than

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

Story goes that Leo saw someone on TV playing on of his maple fretboard guitars, and it looked awful with dark wear blotches on it. Shortly afterwards Fender copied everyone else & introduced rosewood.

Rosewood is warmer-sounding than maple, and wears much better, without showing dirt & smudges. I personally would not want a maple fretboard on ANY of my LP's, SG's or 335's. Too bright & looks like crap.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

I've seen several and I like 'em. I want to own one someday

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

A friend has one of those maple fingerboard Les Paul Customs with a natural finish top. Good guitar, but not my favorite from that era. Another friend had a Custom made several years earlier that had an ebony fingerboard. One of those "Fretless Wonder" guitars. I liked the sound of that one better. They both sounded good, but the "Fretless Wonder" was a freakishly good guitar.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

I like em too, they look pretty sweet. I always like something different.

I like your avatar :14:

Thanks Bro! On the les paul note.. I was 2 seconds too late to get a high bid in on a maple fretboard les paul on eBay once... next time I'll be faster!

Rosewood fretboard on a 3 piece maple neck.

Nope.

Not maple neck.

Maple fretboard.

Like this one ~ LP Custom

Or this one ~ 'nother maple Custom

They're RARE beasts. Went through pages & pages of google images & that was all I could find.

I see 'em every so often...usually years apart. When I was about 16 or 17 my guitar teacher had a natural finish '70s maple neck Custom in his shop with a weight that was almost equal to my age!!! Sounded GREAT but was waaaaaaaay too heavy to even think about owning for very long. Had everything going for it but the weight.

I think the next most rare "stock" LP is the white Standard, of which I've only ever seen two.

Re: Les Paul w/ a Maple fretboard?

I have seen a natural finish LP standard with maple fretboard a year or so ago in a shop. It looked amazing. At the time I just thought it was a shame to equip it with EMGs. I should have tried it unplugged though. Just for the sake of it.
