Hi guys,

I got this Les Paul Standard for sometime, now we wanta play some punky stuff. I found that my LP sounds too dark and distorted for that...

Having read some threads about Phat Cat, I had this thought that maybe they're tha pups to try on..

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

welcome to the forum!!

i think the phat cat in the bridge is a fantastic tone. thick and meaty with good bite

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

Thanks Jeremy!

Further, how does it sound when one puts both pups on, i.e. in the hum-cancelling mod? Is that useful?

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

DO IT! Why do you care if you are playing punky music....

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

Thanks...will try to write something once I got them and played them for a while...

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

hey this isnt really about phat cats but i figured this is the best place to ask anyway

Im thinking about putting a P94 in the neck pos on my LP. I have a Pearly Gates in the bridge. How will those two match up? should i expect major a volume difference between the two? also how would they sound together

thx

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

The PG will have more power, but it's brighty hummer tone will probably match the P-94 perfectly, PG for blues rock, brighter sounds, rhythm, hard rock, and neck pup. for cleans and soloing - I know a guy with '59 and the G P-94, and he likes it!

What kind of pickups do you have in there right now, and what sort of punk rock do you wanna play, like what bands?

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

I've seen lots of punk bands do just fine with stock Les Pauls but I'm not gonna say putting P-90's in there is a bad idea. I'm actually thinkin of doing this to the V i'm about to get so I'd like to hear what you think of it.

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

Thanks guys!

Now I have these stock pups on my Les Paul.

Our band played a lotta the Fratellis...well they're not punk of course, but as I said, punky stuff...

We're into the Ramones, Green Day kinda stuff...but ya see, we're in Hong Kong, and doing Green Day stuff all the way would be toooooo fashionable...

Well I didn't mention what we do now, mainly because I didn't really wanta copy a sound...only that after 10 years of playing with the LP with the stock HB, I grew tired of the humbucking, distorted sound of it....

I want somthing cleaner...more cutting....and vintage I should say...

Hope I've made myself clear...it's kinda negative response to my sound now...I just grew tired of it...and hence wanta try a single coil...

Maybe getting another guitar is a real solution...but I'm just into the look of my LP....LOL

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

hell, i'd heartily recommend a P90 melody maker if you're after a cheap singlecoil les paul shape :)

i love mine to bits, and the stock pickup sounds awesome!

Re: Les Paul w/ Phat Fat

I'd say a Phat Cat would probably be a good choice...but I'd also suggest the SH-4 JB...used by many punk bands.
