Leslie West's Amps

Re: Leslie West's Amps

Leslie is who I think of when I think of "thick" sound.

He is the man behind the Dimarzio Megadrive. I remember all the ads in the 80's.

I have been looking for a vid of "Hard Times" from "Go for your life", but as of yet am unable to find it. It is pretty hard to even find the audio track, the studio track, not the live one.

Re: Leslie West's Amps

LW is probably one of those guys that could make anything he plays sound huge.

From the various amps he's used, from Marshall to Sunn to Stramp, I'm guessing the common denominator was lots of power.

FWIW, I never would have guessed that this guy who was behind Mississippi Queen was from NYC. ANd he sure looks a lot different now than he did in those 70's videos. Looks like he's dropped some pounds.

Which CD would you say is the definitive LW CD to get. The original Mountain recording or one of the more recent recordings?

I would start with an older greatest hits. The early stuff is amazing, they remind me a good deal of Cream. They are worhty of the same recogniton.

I used to play in a band with a guy that owns one of Leslie's Marshall 4x12 cabinets. It had no tolex on it and was just natural wood.

Re: Leslie West's Amps

Leslie has been using Buckers for a long time now...Dean's, Gibsons and a ton of custom stuff from Ed Roman...he has also been using Marshalls, Wrecks and loads of other amps for a whil now too but the classic Leslie West tone was Jr's, Sunn amps and Stramp amps...period!

You've got it right. Saw him last in May 2005. It was so inspiring I took up guitar, and been having a blast ever since! No crap! I am amazed by shredders, but in the end, all I want to hear and play is Leslie.

This has been an amazing thread for me - thanks, guys!!

Re: Leslie West's Amps

Hey guys, just putting my 1 cent in this thread....

I think there was a post about Sunn or Leslie's amps where a forum member mentioned Leslie used the Sunn 2000S amp for "Mississippi Queen"...not the later much-vaunted Sunn model T. Both of them were powered by 6550's.

mid post recollection: I think this info was on the Les Paul Forum. My web cookies got lost, so I have not been able to access the site as a member for a bit. There are a number of posts about Leslie West, P90, and Sunn amps.
