I've played a few later San Dimas Charvels ('84 / '85) as well as 80s and early 90s Jacksons both MIA & MIJ. The necks on all of them are pretty similar in terms of profile; the biggest difference were oiled necks on the 'Dimas Charvels and poly otherwise.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. People always think of 80s superstrats as having superthin necks, but some of those old BC Riches and Kramers had full-on chunky C necks, and those are still my preference. I recently went to NAMM and sadly found that Charvel had nothing for me (outside of the Custom Shop, which I can't afford) b/c all their production necks are too thin for me.

I don't live far from the geographical San Dimas, and I always get a rush when I drive by the highway signs for it. I wish there were a stronger regional connection between the guitar and the place now, what with the whole acquisition by FMIC and dislocation of offices/manufacturing elsewhere. I guess a lot of classic guitar companies now are like that.

This from a MIJ 87 Model 1.
The damage and subsequent crappy repair job have meant this one sat in the "mongrel neck box" for about 20 years.
I got it,a Kramer Ferrington neck(also cracked,but I repaired it and it became the neck on my #1 for years) and a couple of maple board Tele necks as a swap for a rosewood Strat neck.

Maple pointy is heavenly.

I love my quartersawn promod neck, I got it for a steal due to an error in the title. ''chavel neck'' I wouldn't mind a complete promod, if the necks are this well made the bodies must be equally thrilling. Not that the chicken plucker has a bad body. aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Most welcome man! Its funny, Charvel is my favorite brand out there–but I prefer a straight radius which is basically anti-Charvel ;)

I like the Standard C by Warmoth–could go +/- on that neck and be comfortable.

In light of the total history of Charvel/Jackson–true San Dimas location builds makes up very little of the Charvel Jacksons out there....which is pretty funny when you think of the newer MIJ/MIM "San Dimas" guitars lol

So sorry, your saying they are similar to the Jackson/ MIJ Charvels (model series?) or are they more round like the pro mods?

Charvel went under long before Fender brought them back to life. Also, Charvel was in Azusa then Glendora. I know they are both within 20min of San Dimas but still.

EDIT: Come to correct myself, there was a shop in San Dimas as well.

My 87 Charvel and 2005 Jackson have very similar necks. I'll check it out tonight and post pictures of each one. They're beefy but have a flat, not rounded profile but nowhere near a Wizard neck.

Yeah, you got lucky bro!! Most of the time its the other way around. BUNCHES of bodies for sale where people have harvested those heavenly necks off of them..

I was just looking at ebay and found two diff places selling mirror guards, but neither is the place ive used.

I also had a purple mirror on my black RG550 once and that looked cool too.. IMO.

The San Dimas model name is just a nod to the history. San Dimas was a VERY VERY small block of time.

I do like the name and nod to the history...but can't help but chuckle at the fact that like 99% of the Charvels out there have very little to do with Wayne Charvel and San Dimas ;)

2002 Journeyman. Quartersawn neck that is slick as can be, Seymour JB from factory, bone nut. Right now they both have trems blocked as they were crap. This weekend the blue one will get a bladerunner trem that has been laying around and and a Suhr Aldrich along with a new vol pot. I also upgraded tuners on both, hipshot staggered locking. These guitars kick ass and take names! I own much more expensive "better" guitars, but I tend to grab one of these most of the time lately.

True.. Now, I def WONT profess to being fully informed on the subject, but my understand of the story sounds like from the original parts store aspect, once Grover joined it was all his baby. As far as making complete guitars. Neither here nor there, AMAZING Guitars they are!!

Original San Dimas Charvels are very similar to 80s & early 90s Jacksons or the model series in terms of neck profile.

Grover Jackson bought out Wayne Charvel in 1978, and Charvel started making limited numbers of guitars (pre-production or pre-pro) in 1980 or '81. They started regular serialized Charvel production in 1982, with Jackson production guitars shortly thereafter. Charvel / Jackson then moved to Ontario, CA in early 1986 and stayed there until they were folded into FMIC in the early-mid 2000s. Charvel production was moved to Japan in 1986, with some production in Korea starting in 1989. The brand was phased out in the mid-90s before MIJ guitars were reintroduced in 2002 and MIA in 2004.

Oh, I stand corrected. I guess people are just buying them and parting them out....?? I have never done a search for necks. only full guitars and bodies will pop up at the bottom of those listings.... I appreciate the info! I need to start shopping for a neck for my mystery body. Be awhile before I get the $$. Got th finish pedal board 2 and couple other small projects. Then, have to pray I dont botch up the neck pocket width when I buy a neck.. $150?? SCORE!!!!!
