dont paint this place with a broad brush, jaxx ... alot of real good folks here for the most part (this little pissin match nothwithstanding)

and folks, give jaxx a break, he mightve jumped the gun a little on this but he is a good guy - i bought my tokai tele off of him and it got to my house in perfect condition exactly as advertised

I would never ship anything without insurance. Not only does it protect the buyer, it protects the seller as well. The cost to add insurance is minimal as well.

At this point I might as well join in. I'm the second seller caprae referred to. I sold him a pickup, and after receiving payment decided to back out of the deal. I refunded his money, explained why I was backing out (not an excuse -an explanation), and apologized.

caprae handled the whole thing in a straightforward and calm manner. He told me how annoyed he was, frustrated at my sudden change of mind, and wondered why I would risk my (hitherto) good reputation as a seller.

The reason I'm posting is to defend caprae. He would have had every right to call me names, curse me, post a blistering negative post in the Bad Trader thread (maybe he still will? I certainly earned it), etc. etc.

But he did none of these things. So, maybe it's strange of me or something, but I wanted to put in a good word for him. I can't speak for the other transactions, but speaking for myself I couldn't imagine anyone handling our transaction better.

I think this whole thread has gotten way out of hand. This is as good a board to trade on as I have found anywhere on the net. There is no protection on any board that I am aware of, other than what is offered by Paypal or your credit card.

There are plenty of good sellers here, and good buyers. I have run into no bad traders, and have only heard about a very few in my 5+ years on this forum.

Time to bring this to an end and stop the hating.

Just to re-affirm where I am on this;

My point is not "buyer beware". That would imply that there's some sort of sketchy dealings going on with the seller.

There was nothing malicious or deceptive in my actions when I shipped the guitar. I was NOT trying to "screw" the buyer.

My point is: "buyer be AWARE".

As we can see from many of the previous posts, there are many well-thought-of traders on this forum that do not always ship with insurance.

This is not the difference between a good, honest trader and a degenerate. These are extra services. They are not always included. If extra services are not mentioned, do not assume that you'll be getting extra services.

Do not simply assume that because you think that it is only right to ship something with extra services, that the seller will feel the same way. If you want extra services, ask beforehand. Thats the only way to know for sure.

I sometimes make the mistake of assuming the seller will be providing these "extra" services and after all it is an extra. On ebay especially if a seller is charging $40, $50, $60 + to ship say a guitar, you do expect insurance for that cost, but it always pays to ask. You don't want to be on the wrong end of a shady deal, it happened to me a few times and always was when I assumed. I guess out of laziness this can happen as I generally trust people I deal with but on Ebay even an unblemished feedback has no guarantees if you don't ask specific questions.

As a seller, I always cover my butt as it doesn't cost much more to insure. I usually factor this into my shipping charge which is a flat fee. For guitars usually $35 covers everything. Pickups/small effects $7.50-$10.00 etc etc. This way the buyer will feel I am offering these "extras" no questions asked. Better to be safe than sorry.

This one is directed at me. I bit my tongue, saying to myself that I wasn't going to post anything, but have decided to post up. I like eveyone has said mentioned before hand, you should have asked. The pick up is insured (like I said, you should have asked), and you seemed like a honest enough person that if it didn't get there, I'd reimburse the $50 (mint, in new condition Jazz- neck pick up. $69.99 at your nearest music store), and I'd fight it out with USPS. I waited 5 days for the E-check to clear, felt bad that you had to wait too, and after working a 12 hr. night shift, and taking my kid to school, I waited 30 mins. for the Post Office to open up to send it priority mail. Did I mention I had the flu and had to run across the street to McDonalds to use the bathroom a few times?
But my experience has shown that when going thru priority mail (air mail) that packages are better tracked and for the most part not damaged. This seems to hold true for most shippers.

That is definately the lesson I have learned. I had no plans of putting anyone on the Bad Trader Alert. These guys got their reputations by making good honest trades. I had three of 5 or 6 trades not go the way they would have gone had I been the seller. I was getting quite disheartened.

I apologize for using the word Immature. That was not the best choice of words. NOW THIS IS JUST A GUESS that in general, but not in all cases, the older guys will track and insure to protect themselves, and the younger guys will take a more casual approach toward it. Being older, I've seen too many shipped packages go wrong in the companies I've worked for. You live longer, you see more of what can happen.

I know I've learned a good lesson about not assuming. I hope others have learned to protect themselves. I hope we can put this to an end now. As Krank says,

out of curiosity, i checked "View all posts" for myself and i actually have 52...
not that that's a lot...but it's a lot more than what shows under my name...

i just counted up and find i'm a member of 12 guitar forums....some i visit a couple times a month....others several times a day.....if i'm in the mood to buy a guitar, i'm checking TGP hourly...but bought another Hamer off the HFC last night....GOD, i'm a sick man...

I think it's funny that people post things for sale, you post in the thread and PM them and they are unresponsive. On one occasion I never heard back. On 3 occasions the seller got back to me like 3 months after I expressed an interest.

I also like these guys with 1-7 posts and zero rep here selling high-end gear. Sure, I'll send you 2 grand. Is cash okay? LOL!

Let me just make a few points and hopefully shortly thereafter, this thread will die:

1) My business consists of 99.99% online sales, thus everything gets shipped. Most of my sales are generated via eBay. For both USA and International buyers, I offer shipping insurance for a set charge based on the item value. I do not mandate that the buyer purchase insurance. I also state upfront that if an item is damaged or lost and the buyer didn't purchase insurance, its their responsibility to get it resolved with the shipper. I don't automatically charge for shipping upgrades that people don't want.

2) Delivery confirmation is NOT the same thing as package tracking. It merely provides the seller (shipper) with proof that the article arrived at its final destination. It does not provide enroute status.

3) I have yet to have a deal go bad on here and I've done my share of transactions.

4) This would have been much better handled via PM or a phone call.

5) FWIW, backing out of a sale and refunding someones money is not necessarily grounds for an assault on the bad traders forum. Things happen. I don't know what the particulars are, but if I paid for an item and the seller was unable to come through with the sale but refunded me in full, I'd probably be disappointed, but it would end at that.

Look, as others have stated, communication is essential. I had one deal on here that resulted in a delay in payment (there were to be two payments--one was made immediately). However, I was in contact with the other party almost weekly. The poor guy was hospitalized either 2 or 3 times (I don't recall all of the details) after the transaction began. However, the transaction WAS completed, and he insisted on making an additional payment to make up for the delays. I was not desperate for $$$ at the time. I was simply clearing space.

seems that it doesn't count all posts for some reason...
i've also bought and sold on Ebay, TGP, Dean Forum, Gcom, and HFC....have a lot more posts on those forums...
i KNOW that most people here would deal fairly....just bothers me seeing so many with the "Buyer Beware" mentality....which i haven't seen elsewhere although i'm sure some exist...

I was not trying to make a personal attack; rather, inquiring whether your epxerience on this forum was sufficient to make a broad statement about the integrity of its members.

i also look at a member's number of posts when he's selling something....doesn't mean i won't deal with him, but i will proceed with more caution...
i'm just the quiet type....well, except for today...LOL

The admins just recently decided that Trading Post posts won't count in your post count. To have your post count go up, you would need to post in the other rooms.

He realized that there were folks signing up JUST to put their gear in the Trading Post. By taking away the post counts in this room, you can tell if the person is lurking just to sell gear and not a regular member.

I guess I definitely gotta remember to ask. Probably wouldn't hurt to specify that I'd want my guitar shipped in a box, not just in the case with some packing tape around it to keep it shut.

Believe it or not, I have received a guitar, not from anyone here but off E Bay, where the seller said "I'll ship it in a case", I thought "Great! He's including a case!" and he literally meant he was not putting it in a box, just put it in a cheap softshell cardboard guitar case, stuffed some newspapers in it, taped it shut, stuck an address sticker on sent it.

Sadly, I guess you gotta ask.

Oh, I should add, I have done a few transactions with people on this board, though not for any big ticket items, and had no problems whatsoever in any of those deals.

I know have only a few posts here, but here's my take anyway. I've done a lot of deals strictly through PMs here, too.

Anyway, here's what happened to me. I worked out a trade with DracoAran, and I put some good feedback for him on the Good Trader thread. He saw I did that, and mentioned that he never got my pickup - but he did it without being a jerk about it, just checking on the status. Well, I sent it with Delivery Confirmation, but I lost the paperwork, and he never got the pickup. We worked out another trade, and everything was cool, and I even offered to send him back the pickup he'd sent to me.

More recently, last week I sold pickups to TattooedCarrot, and I was going to send them through regular USPS, but I had other things going on and forgot to send them, so I sent them Priority instead. I told him what happened, and he was cool with it.

Not sure what my point is other than to say:

1. Give it time, you don't even know that there's going to be a problem yet, so why raise a ruckus over possibly nothing, and 2. If something is awry in the end, try work it out then and don't go generally slagging people. That, to me, is worse than actually calling someone out by name, because it takes a shot at just about everyone whose has a Good Trader rating, especially those of us who do honest trades but aren't on this forum a lot. Whereas if you call someone out, they can at least defend themselves, which Krank has done, quite well.

My $.02 that no one asked for...
