Lets talk about strings shall we?

Whats up all?
I have been playing the same kind of strings since the 70's. I buy Fender Nickel plated Steel. Over the decades I have tried other brands but always go back to them. The Bullets are nice which replaced the older models I played back in the 80's as they don't sell them anymore.
Recently I picked up a pair of Pure Nickel Fender Strings and as they are ok, I get some weird ringing on the high E string meaning the Plain Steel or in this case Nickel. I thought by going with a Jazz string I could mellow out some of the extreme high's and round out the mid range. This is true except for that E string.

Just curious what are the Hot strings today? I'm a left over Heavy Metal 80's guitarist and don't stray from that style much but I'm trying to learn some Blues Guitar now which falls right into 80's metal anyway LOL.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I've heard good things about the D'Addario NYXL's. I haven't tried them extensively, but I played them a little bit the other day and they seemed a little 'stiff' but on the whole felt quite nice and durable. Admittedly, they were 11's whereas I use 9's, so I'm sure I'd find them a lot nicer if they were 9's. Personally though, I'm going to stick with the Ernie Ball Super Slinkys.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I'm a GHS guy now. Used to use D'Addario.

Boomer 9.5's. If I could get an .016" G without buying them separately, I'd go with 10s.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I use Darco strings. They're cheap, sound good and have great longevity!

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I use Ernie Ball Pink Slinkies. Except for my Devlin, she's got D'addario 10-52 I think. I think strings are about what sounds good to you, my advice is to buy several different sets of your favorite gauge and play them and see how you like them. Tone is subjective to the listener (mostly) and if you like it then play it.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

10s - 46s. Any brand is fine, but I prefer Rotosound. However, since they aren't very accessible, I tend to stick to Ernie Ball Slinkys and Fender Nickel-Plated Steel.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I've been playin' since '89 and I believe I've tried all of 'em. I use DR strings 11-50
Do some 1-1 1/2 step bends with 11's......it builds character, and calluses.:9:

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I used to use D'Addario EXPs in .11-.52. For the last year I've been using Ernie Ball Cobalts, skinny top heavy bottom.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I use Ernie Ball strings for both acoustic and electric.

Have you tried the Ernie Ball cobalt strings? I love those on my Charvel and my Fender Strat!

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I use Cleartone 10s works for me , coated and last a long time. If you want to tame a overly bright guitar might want to try some flatwound strings.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

Love Ernie Ball. Slinky's

Just tried some badass strings.com string and been pretty pleased with them.

Only brand I really don't like at all is ghs

Elixirs here. I like the sound of Ernie Balls better but my sweat is terrible for them.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I've tried a few things and my favs have been cleartone, EB slinky, d'addario, GHS boomers, fender...
always trying to find a balance between sweet tone and long life.
Right now I'm on a fender pure nickel kick. It's feeling good and with religious use of some dunlop string cleaner I'm getting that balance. I can get a pack of Fender pure nickels to last 2 weeks. With no string cleaner I kill most strings in like 3 days.
Just picked up a pack of DR pure blues, finally gonna try those when my Fender strings give out.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I've tried EB's, Dad's, GHS, DR, and Dunlop. Except when I'm trying out a new string (like when EB released the Cobalts or M Steels) I always go back to Dunlop's Heavy Core 11-50 set.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I use D'addario Flat Wound, 10-48 or 11-50, depends on the guitar.

Re: Lets talk about strings shall we?

I used D'addario's (9-42/10-46) for donkey's years but off late I've found them kind of tinny/over-bright sounding...not sure if they changed them or if I'd been buying duds (lots of fakes around here)

I'm now using Sfarzo Super Screamers (9-42/10-46) on most of my guitars...they 're excellent...or Roto pinks/yellows..also great.

Ernie Ball (9-52) slinky's on my 7-string Ibby Sabre...
