Lets talk Blackstar amps

Re: Lets talk Blackstar amps

I recently played through the HT-20 and HT-40 and really dug the tones out of them. I think I'm in the market for the HT-20 H because I'm looking for a smallish head that will transport easily and still be heard in a rehearsal. It's either that or a Peavey Classic 30 head.

I'd likely put it through my 1x12 Veteran 30 speaker.

Good choice, that's what I finally settled on, I have a WGS Classic Lead in my cab.

Love Blackstar.

I have the HT-5H with two 10" cabs and like it. A lot. For a rock/metal sound at bedroom volumes to small jam its just fantastic. I find you need to get it singing to really hear the pre and power tube interact, it can sound a bit boxy at low volumes. It sounds absolutely killer through a 4x12.

The updates they've made on the new ones make sense - 12" speakers instaead of 10" in the cabs, a separate eq for the clean, and the ability to take the emulated out to a DAW or PA without killing the main output. I use a good reverb pedal so I dont care so much about not having built in reverb.

The one area where i would fault it are on the clean channel - this sounds good for a break-up clean, but as others have pointed out this a two tube 5W head so the headroom is not there. The other thing I've found is that the clean really makes any dirt pedal you put into it sound thin, so you have to eq it to get it right, which in turn screws up your eq for the od channel. They've adressed this somewhat on the new ones with the separate tone knob for the clean.

Pretty sure my next amp purchase is going to be a series one 100w6L6...need to test it myself, but if it sounds as good as does here, i'm sold...
